19 September 1917 Former Tram Driver Killed Mrs. Smith, 137, Ardwick-street, Burnley Lane, has received a letter from a second-lieutenant, informing her that her husband, Sergt. Arthur Smith, R.F.A., aged 37 years, was killed instantly by a shell on September 10. Deceased had been in the Army 17 years altogether as a regular and reservist. Whilst he was a reservist he worked on the Accrington tramways as a driver for some years. He joined up again on the outbreak of the war, and had just been in France three years when his death occurred.
