Nelson Seaman Refutes Admiralty Message
Mrs. Whitham, 15 Leonard-street, Nelson, on Sunday evening received a communication from the Admiralty informing her that the name of her nephew, Able Seaman Ward, believed to have been on board H.M.S. India did not appear in the lists of survivors received, and that it was to be feared he must be regarded as having lost his life. A note of sympathy from the King and Queen was enclosed.
Yesterday Mrs. Whitham received a postcard from Ward telling her not to worry, and that he was all right and was being well treated. Ward, who is 31 years of age, was an ex-naval reservist and volunteered for service on the outbreak of war. He is the possessor of the Royal Humane Society's certificate and bronze medal for life saving.
