Swain of 42, Harold Avenue, Burnley, has this week been informed that her husband, Corporal Harry Swain, has been killed in action in Western Europe. His commanding officer has written to Mrs. Swain: “Please accept on behalf of the whole battalion the deepest sympathy over the loss in action of your husband, Corpl. Swain. He died leading his section in a final assault on a German position. He showed the magnificent courage, and through his example enabled the position to be captured. He was killed instantly and suffered no pain.” Corporal Swain joined the Army five years ago and served in France at the outbreak of the war. He returned to France shortly after D-Day.
