Haggate Baptist Chapel, Plot 12, vault 17 - it was bought by Martha Ann Kippax in September 1939 although there was no burial in it at that time.

1 Martha Ann Kippax Age 66 May 14th 1942

2 Martha Ann Kippax Age 74 Feb 10th 1951

3 Bertha Jane Kippax Age 83 Jan 4th 1961

4 James Kippax Age 91 June 22nd 1966

(the dates are the date of burial, not date of death)
The three ladies are the wives of James Kippax.

What did the first Martha Ann die from? I wonder if she was ill and that is why she bought the plot?

Can you PM the details of the lady you contacted to me please. I have a Sutcliffe couple with no known grave but I know their dates of death. I think they will probably be at Haggate.
Mind you the register I want might be at the library.

I have sent for the death cert of the first Martha Ann so we will see. It isn't always conclusive though is it? as they put what they actually died of and not what caused it--does that make sense?

It does make sense yes.
Especially if there was something like pneumonia that actually finished them off rather than what they had suffered with for some time.

The death cert has arrived and Martha Ann died in Municipal Hospital, Casterton Avenue, Burnley of diabetic coma, diabetes mellitus. One of her daughters remembers her using a large needle to inject herself, she must have been one of the early ones to do that.

Hi Gloria, Diabetes mellitus is type 1 and the more serious than type 2, Insulin was first used to treat diabetes in 1921, I think it would have been a hit and miss job by the doctors in those days, but they obviously tried their best putting her on Insulin, also a healthy diet is very important, so you could not just rely on insulin alone. A Diabetic coma is the result of a severe acidosis occurring in diabetes mellitus, it needs treatment of immediate administration of insulin and intravenous fluids. So she probably did'nt stand much of a chance eh! She could have gone to bed quite alright (apparently) and then slipped into a coma while she was asleep. I have Diabetes running in my family Gloria, but we are a lot luckier today. :!: Stephanie

She would almost be a guinea pig Gloria!
I wonder how long she suffered with diabetes and how it was controlled beforethe injections? Maybe that's why she purchased the plot?
Is it possible to view medical records?

I am not sure if there isn't a 100yr thing on viewing records. I have tried to get hold of some for my maternal grandmother who died in a lunatic asylum in 1964 and keep hitting a brick wall. I have the death cert but that doesn't tell me why she was committed.

I seem to remember being told that all records get destroyed so many years after death, cant remember how many years though. All records now are kept on dics arnt they, but it was all paper records in those days and they could only be kept for so long.

I asked at the docs if I could look at my records and they only had them from 1960 something, I wonder if they were destroyed after 40yrs. Sadly it was the early ones I wanted to see.

I don't think I agree with that...surely if a person is still living, the records should be kept until the set time period after their death?

The hospital records from when I was in hospital as a child are no more, they even start you new records for each hopital that you attend. When I went in a hospital in Bury, they did'nt have my Burnley hospital records. I find that odd too, there is no continuation in care that way is there.
