The building that Roger pointed out on those slides (on Wednesday) as the workhouse doesn't look big enough to have housed so many people!

It isn't that one Mel, it is the General Hospital below Lane Head, the old part on Briercliffe Rd used to be a workhouse.

It is the old part of Burnley General hospital facing Briercliffe Road which sadly looks as if it may be demolished. There were other workhouses in Burnley and Padiham and I believe one was mentioned at Haggate. Very sad when you read it. Especially I thought the widow with three children one born in India the other in East Indies. I should think a soldiers widow. I don't think she would have imagined ending up in a workhouse.

The workhouse on Briercliffe Rd, ex hospital, is being pulled down as we speak.
