No sure what you mean mel - something for more? The article was very interesting but my heart sank when i read about the water damage. Parts of the manchester 1851 census were water-damaged and I lose track of some of mine as a result. I just know the ones i want most will either have been out ice skating all night or living in the area that got wet! the only good thing about being a pessimist is sometimes you get pleasantly surprised and generally you don't get disappointed. |

Portia, have you heard about the 1851 unfilmed census project, led by Ray Hulley? Some of the Manchester returns that were water-damaged have now been transcribed by volunteers using specialized equipment. There is some information on the site of the Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society. Joan |

I have Joan, but thanks for the suggestion. My aunt s a member of the Manchester FHS and helps out there sometimes. Apparently, even tho they've managed to transcribe some of the unfilmed pages, they haven't got everthing (or hadn't last I heard). It must be quite bad because I've seen films of some of the partly damaged pages and they're just black. I did get lucky with one - she was right at the top of a page that was only legible for about 4 lines down. |

Hi Portia, I was a member of the Manchester and Lancs. Society for a few years because a branch of my Burnley family originated in Ashton-under-Lyne. The portion of that 1851 census that I need appears to be just missing - sooo frustrating. Joan |

The area I need is the eastern edge of Ashton-under-Lyne, on the border with Stalybridge. I contacted Ray Hulley about it several years ago but it isn't among the water-damaged ones he worked on. It appears to be just missing. Joan |
