Last weekend I found a reference on Find My Past for Probate info held by Cheshire Archives relating to a person living in Barrowford. I clicked to 'view image' and viewed the probate index entry mentioning will and 2 codicils for said Barrowford man. So I went onto the Cheshire Archives site, you can order documents etc. online. Searching the catalogue gave no result for what I had found on FMP but then I spotted a note at the bottom of the page saying that the catalogue was incomplete and if there was something you expected to find but didn't, give them a call. So on Tuesday (they are closed Mondays) I phoned. I perhaps didnt explain myself very well but the lady I spoke to was of the attitude 'if it's not on the catalogue then there is no more to be had and that what I had viewed on FMP was it'. Not satisfied with this I decided to phone Lancashire Archives thinking that, as the man was a Barrowford man, they may also have details. I spoke to a very nice lady who suggested I email my request and if they could find it, they would provide me with a quote for a copy. I emailed, 2 days later (as specified in the automated reply) I received a quote. They've got it!! Order now placed and one happy Stokie here.

This leads me to think that I was fobbed off by Cheshire Archives. Should I email them to vent my frustrations? I don't want it to be a complaint as such but someone who is new to research would have just accepted their response and not taken it any further. I knew that with 2 codicils mentioned, there is almost certainly a document to be seen.

I don't think it is worth complaining, BUT, I would get in touch and tell them what you have found out. She may have been having a bad day, or simply thought she was right, but the attitude could have put weaker mortals off.
And, you never know, they may appreciate you telling them what Lancashire Archives found.
