I've long been interested in Cop Row, which of course runs from the Commercial to the Craven Heifer (with two breaks for later streets), and was all in Burnley not Briercliffe. Built about 1819. Initially known as New Row ('near Saxifield'), then Long Row, then Cop Row, with overlaps. 'Cop' as in weaving (a cop held the weft), or (less likely I think)meaning the top of a hill.

Many of my ancestors and other relatives there from the start, and through to late 19th century.

Does anyone by any chance have good friends living there ? If so might they be asked in confidence to see what the deeds might have to say ? It doesn't seem to be known who the builder was [Bennett says who might have, but can't be right !]

Well you answered something that I have thought about every once in a while. 'New Row near Saxifield'. I have seen this on the census over the years and wondered what it ended up as, half guessing it was probably Cop Row but now I now for sure. :D

Would it say who the builder was Rex? Were the properties owned by one person at the beginning? if so, I think the current deeds would begin when they were split up and sold off.

The Haggate registers provide much of the information, with their place name detail.

Such deeds as exist may not go back all that far, but they might have some information, it just seemed worth a query.

I think Roger Frost, with whom I have coresponded on this in the past, had some idea as to who might have owned the land. But we never followed it up.

Another name for the area was Lassycaul, with variants : I think I posted something about that some time ago.
