I understand that there is a building or dwelling in your town called Proctor Cote.Can anyone enlighten me further? |

There is a Proctor Cote near Extwistle. As far as I am aware there is no direct evidence that the Proctors lived there. I am sure they must have done but I have not yet found the evidence. It is definitely 'Proctor' country. Is this Jim that already writes to me about the Proctors Sue |

Hello Sue Nice to meet you again. I have been looking at all the interesting data that you have put on this site.At first I didnt realise that it was you but slowly I realised that it couldnt be anyone else. The name Proctor Cote crops up all the time when I am looking for Proctors in Barlick or Brierfield. I am also interested in the spelling of the surname .For instance on your 1851 list of proctors the spelling is Procktor. I suppose whoever compiled the list in the first place was a poorly educated clerk and wrote the name down as it was spoken.Then the spelling became Proctor and then Procter in my Grandfathers time. The spelling of Proctor, just seems to change randomly, even for the same person. As I understand it spellings of names weren't formalised until about the 1870-1880s, mainly due to an increasing education system, and as my Local History teacher told me last autumn, teachers needed rules to teach spelling. Ceratinly about that time the spellings of Proctor indifferent families begins to settle down. I just regard them all as the same global family when trying to find links. Sue |

I am a stranger to your town but my ancestors lived there 200 years ago. On a lot of documentation the name--HAGGATE-- crops up.What is Haggate. Is it a village or is it a District of Briercliffe? |

Hi James, A very brief resume, Haggate is a district of Briercliffe. It is very old, quite small and is at the top of the hill where the cross roads are connecting Burnley, Nelson, Worsthorne and the road over Widdop to Hebden Bridge. Haggate is about 1 mile'ish from Proctor Cote. |

Taken from Farms of East Lancashire by J. Nadin Procter Cote, Briercliffe Procter Cote survives to this day having been restored and renovated, 'Cote' in this sense means cottage, the cottage belonging to the Proctor family. |
