Glenys The Abel St property still seems to be there according to the royal mail website but it doesn't recognise Tentor St. Is it definetly spelt like that? Have you a rough idea where it was? M |

Glenys/Portia I am sure I remember a Tentre Street in Burnley but I cant find that either. I wonder if it has been demolished. ? I will get the pics for you no problem Glenys.Can at least get Able Street for you. |

Yes. have found Tentre Street on an old Burnley Street map.It is/was in the Fulledge area of Burnley and runs parallel with Plumbe street/Oxford Road.It actually ran into Temple Street. I will have to drive down tomorrow to see if it is still there, but i have a feeling it was demolished a few years ago. |

Gloria clever of you to think of using the Royal Mail postcode site to check if these buildings still exist. I thought of Multimap (or Streetmap, etc) but of course even if they show the street, they don't show numbers. And the RM site ought to be kept more or less up-to-date, too. A useful trick to remember for future ancestor-house-hunts! Charon |

I searched http://maps.live.com/ for Tentre St where David said it used to be and found two streets named respectively Higher Tentre and Lower Tentre. From the aerial view, the houses appear to be a modern development, fitted in among streets of older properties and industrial buildings. Both streets are accessed from Oxford Rd. Higher Tentre is BB11 3BH. Does anyone know where the name comes from? A Google search for "Tentre St" found only the one in Burnley. No such word in the Concise OED Charon |

Charon 10 Tentre Street was demolished quite a few years ago now, There were quite a lot of stone built terraced properties in that area of Burnley and which were close to four mills ie Pentridge Mill,Springfield Mill,Oxford Mill and Fulledge Mill.Many of the people in those houses would have been weavers etc in the mills. I do not know an origin for Tentre but a Tenter was a person who worked in a milll who stretched the cloth after it had been woven. A machine called a Tenter now does this automatically. |

Hi again Charon Yes just looked on live maps and Higher Tentre Street and Lower Tentre Street are new streets in the last couple of years.The oldTentre Street ran from North to South connecting Temple Street to Holmes Street.That area was just one mass of terraced properties before demolition. |

David, living history! Many thanks..This thread is interesting to me particularly because I believe Abel St is in the parish of St Andrew where my grandfather William Henry Cooper was vicar 1917 to 1931. His father-in-law, William Bannister, had made his way in the mills, from being a dipper in 1851 (living at Lane Head Briercliffe) to a cotton overlooker in 1861 and a power loom overloooker in 1861 (living at Clow Bridge) - then he made a break and set up as a grocer and draper in Stafford St/Elm St (I think on the corner) in 1881 and 1891. William's son James had inherited the business by 1901, but I imagine some of the Bannisters were still around when my grandfather Cooper, born in the Isle of Wight, arrived at St Andrew's in 1917 with his wife, William's daughter Bertha. Interesting too about "tenter". Thanks for the explanation. So many specialised trades in the cotton industry! A fascinating part of my family history Charon |

Google Earth is another way of finding out whether addresses still exist. It can be downloaded free. I tried 69 Abel St. and it brought it up, but didn't pinpoint it exactly as it has with other addresses I've tried. My Veevers great grandparents lived at 10 Abel Street. They had a greengrocers shop and later were at number 8. I'm not sure which one was the shop. There were twelve children and the parents in that tiny propery. Joan |

I was down there today Joan taking a photo for Glenys. The low numbers on Abel Street are towards the town end of the street. .Live Search Maps is much better than google earth for the Burnley area.They have a birds eye view option which is fantastic and Burnley is one of the few areas where the birds eye view works so far,and it is really up to date,was taken in 2007 by the looks of it. see link http://maps.live.com/ |
