I'm trying to read an entry on the 1851 Briercliffe census but the image is very faint. The address looks like Folley Row, Haggate. Does anyone know whether there actually was a Folley Row, or if not what I'm likely to be looking at? It’s on p15 of district no 4a |

It is a bit easier to read on the next couple of pages. It looks like Folley Row. I looked on 1861 to see if it was any better but it just gives Haggate on there. |

Hi Portia/Gloria Never heard of that one,what are the streets before and after the Folley Row entries,will that give us a clue to the area ?? |

The one at the top of the page looks like Acre Row, which I know is still there, and after Folley Row is Edmondson Row. |

The previous entries just say Haggate, the ones after are Edmondsons Row. I wish they'd had biros in those days. Better yet - postcodes and national insurance numbers! |

Its Acre St which is there, but I bet it is the same group of cottages. What is the name of the row which backs onto it and faces the churchyard? There were also some back-to-back houses which were pulled down next to the Hare and Hounds, but maybe they weren't that old. |

You're righ Gloria, I couldn't read the bit which said Acre St. I think they have a census index in the library so next time I'm in town I'll call in & ask. This definitely doesn't look like any of the usual addresses you see on Briercliffe censuses. |

Does this give us a clue??? census of 1851 shows the family still living on the corner of Haggate cross-roads. Joseph now aged 67, Mary aged 65 and Sarah aged 25 with two children, a boy again named Joseph and a girl named Mary Ann; but no husband. That year the property had been renamed as Edmondson Row, indicating that possibly Joseph owned the remaining few houses as well as his own dwelling. Sarah later married Samuel Whittaker and the little girl, Mary Ann took his name, but the boy remained as Joseph Edmondson all his life. His birth certificate does not indicate the name of his father which is the normal practice in cases of illegitimacy. In spite of a very thorough search I have not been able to find this boy's eventual marriage certificate, which I had hoped would give his father's name. http://www.edmondson.org.uk/briercliffe/joseph.html |

Maureen, I haven't seen addresses before it usually just says Haggate. But, th'acre as it is known locally, is very old and still there. We went to look at a cottage there in the dark and distant past before marriage, it was really tiny. |

Yes,Acre Street runs in a semi circle from Nelson Road onto Halifax Road.The next Row of cottages are on Chapel Court,they face Haggate graveyard. Perhaps Folley Row was amongst those cottages at some point. You can see them clearly if you go onto Live Maps and go to the crossroads at Haggate |

I was just looking at the photo on the home page and the shop has a date stone of 1861, so that was not there at the time we are looking for Folley Row, I wonder when the cottages on th'acre were built? |

On this photo Gloria the shop building does not appear to be there and yet it appears there is a low wall which I suppose could front some older building that was demolished prior to the shop being built. http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/ima ... age_68.jpg |
