The Preston Chronicle

Saturday April 16 1831

On Sunday last, a new chapel, in connection with the Particular Baptists, was opened in Burnley. The collection amounted to £50 12s., exclusive of about £300 which had been previously subscribed. The chapel is capable of accommodating 600 persons. We are sorry to add that an accident occurred which had well nigh proved fatal to several individuals. -Mr. J. Hargreaves, cabinet-maker, Mr. Thornber jun., cotton-spinner, and Miss Lonsdale, all of Colne, together with Miss Wainwright, were returning from the service on Sunday evening, in a gig, the vehicle was upset, in consequence of a heap of stones being left on the road side. Mr. Hargreaves had his head much bruised; Miss Lonsdale's arm and shoulder blade were broken; Miss Wainwright had an arm broken and shoulder dislocated; but Mr. Thornber escaped with a slight injury. The horse was nearly killed on the spot, and the gig was broken to pieces.
