Post subject:  Inghamite and help to find a grave
It is terribly difficult to find out where someone is buried especially when you are on the other side of the World.
I am looking for the 1862 burial place of Sarah Shackleton.
Cemsearch is excellent but there are Shackleton's buried in all of their churchyards so I'm really just picking one and hoping for the best so far with no result. I have contacted Burnley Library and the Council but their records don't show her anywhere. So where to?
I thought perhaps the Inghamite Church where there are lots of Shackletons buried ...more than 40! again a stab in the dark but what else can i do ...? open to suggestions Anyone !? :-)
Not sure why she is not at Haggate with her husband but then her own family might have had some say in the matter of her final resting place ?
Should i then be looking for places where there are lots of Greenwoods buried?

What makes you think she isn't at Haggate Glenys?

If she isn't on the MI's it could just be that she didn't get a mention (if her hubbys stone is in the MI's) or her stone is no longer standing, if she wasn't buried with her hubby.

The burials that I have only go up to about 1840 if I remember right. I assume they cover more years at the library though.

I assume you've spotted on Cemsearch that there are a great many Greenwoods buried at Wheatley Lane Inghamites? I was up there just before Christmas and I noticed that one of the predominant names on the stones was Greenwood. Trouble is the graveyard is very big and the graves are packed in so tightly in places you can't walk between them and often don't look too safe.
From memory, many of the 'occupants' were from Nelson/ Barrowford. Would this fit with what you know about Sarah Shackleton and/ or her family?
If she was living in the Wheatley Lane/ Fence area when she died, is it possible she was buried at Wheatley Lane Methodists? There's also St Mary's at Newchurch.

Where was she living in the 1861 census? Do you know her date of birth, death, marriage or places of? Anything might give us a clue. What was the name of her husband?

Sarah Shackleton ( nee Greenwood )
Date of Death 2 October 1862
Age 30 years
of Burnley Lane Burnley

Husband: Robinson Shackleton

Robinson is buried at Haggate with his second wife Elizabeth
He died in 1890 and Elizabeth in 1916. He was an Elder of Haggate Church

On the 1861 census:

Robinson Shackleton
Sarah "
John (son of 1 year)
Lower Clough Head Marsden

*I have cemsearched Nelson Cemetery.
*Bereavement Services have checked Burnley Cemetery.
*Burnley Library have checked Haggate burial records, the Parish Church of Burnley St. Peters, the cemetery records, their online index and the Lancashire Lantern obit. index.

The Inghamite Church is tempting because there are a lot of Shackleton and Greenwood graves there. Still only a guess though. She was looking like a Baptist so i'm not sure the Inghamites are anything Baptist ...I thought they were Methodist?

A couple of notes:

Sarah Greenwood was born in Great Marsden (Nelson)

Married Robinson Shackleton in 1860 at The Parish Church in the Parish of Great Marsden. County Lancaster.

Named her father as James Whitaker (Farmer)

She was a resident of Barker House Lane and he of Pig Hole.

Sarah did die long before Robinson and after only 2 years of marriage. The son she left in 1862 at 2 years old was not Robinson's son.

Makes a bit more sense now - it's not that she wasn't buried with her husband but the other way round because she died first. Being that he died such a long time after and was remarried by then I can see why they might not be together.

Looked for her in the 1841 and 1851 census to try to ascertain who her parents were, then I realised you had put her father's name in your last reply. The plot thickens, her maiden name was Greenwood, her father Whitaker and her married name Shackleton. :?

Found this on here in the church records, not what you were after but interesting as all the names are there.

Shackleton Greenwood, weaver, aged full, of Finny Moor Foot Briercliffe, bachelor, father Bernard Smith joiner.

How interesting to follow your trains of thought and discovery!
Now...Sarah's story...especially the filled in blank bits....would make a wonderful historical novel. Place Extwhistle Hall in there somewhere and you have a best seller....and the world will flock to see the place, as they do with Bronte's Haworth!!
