Hi to anyone reading this message. I have today discovered your excellent website and forum and would like to offer information about my tree and hopefully learn something new.

As a background, I have been investigating my family tree for about 8 years now. Limited time (the usual excuses, job, kids etc.) means I have not got as far as I would like, however what is rather interesting (I hope!) is that about 12% of my ancestors appear to have been born in and around Briercliffe. Inter-breeding appears to be the name of the game?! I find it amazing how surnames from my tree seem to be interlinked at different points in history. Any wonders how I turned out so strange?!!

Anyway here is the story of my family, full details are sketchy at best, please bear with me, I consider myself a beginner!!

I have counted generations back from myself here, not from the start. Sorry not sure on 'etiquette'.

Generation 3 (my grandfather)
Thomas Fogg, 1901 - 1968 Born in Bolton Lancashire
Generation 4
John Fogg, b 1876 Bolton m. Alice Foster 1877 Briercliffe
Generation 5
Robert Foster 1852 Briercliffe m. Alice Kippax 1846 Briercliffe
Generation 6
William Foster 1804 Briercliffe m. Mary (?) 1811 Briercliffe --- John Kippax 1804 Briercliffe m. Alice Nuttall (?) 1808 Briercliffe
Generation 7 (no Fosters from this far back)
Joshua Kippax (1768-1847) m. Sally Jackson (1778-1868) John Nuttall m. Mary (?)
Generation 8
James Kippax 1735 - 1769 m. Susan Nutter 1739 James Jackson 1738

So if anyone has any comments I would be very pleased to hear them.

Thanks for your time,

Angela Glossop (nee Fogg)

Hi Angela, welcome to the site.
Have you seen my Kippax family tree on the home page. I go back to Joshua born 1769 and his father James (obviously).

Hi Gloria. Yes, I have had a little scout around on the home page and had a brief look at your Kippax family tree. Once I get some more time (off work tomorrow, so hopefully then), I'll get chance to ratify what I have already and also learn some new things which would be exciting.

So I take it from that then that we are cousins in some shape or form - very distantly of course!!

Kind regards,

Angela

Hi Bob

From my research I cannot see the people that you have referred to, but I have some additional names that may be of some help to you.

Alice Nuttall married John Kippax (1804), son of Joshua Kippax and Sally Jackson.

John Nuttall married Ellen Kippax (1808), daughter of Joshua Kippax and Sally Jackson (yes, John Kippax and Ellen Kippax were brother and sister). They had the following children:
Sarah Nuttall 1830, born in Haggate
Susanna(h) Nuttall 1834 born in Haggate
Esther Nuttall 1838 born Burnley
Nanny/Nancy Nuttall 1841 born Burnley
Alice Nuttall 1843 born Burnley
Ellen Nuttall 1849 born Burnley

That is where the extent of the Nuttall name begins and ends in my tree, most of them female so that kind of brings things to an end! I hope this will be of some help to you.

Kind regards,

Angela.

Hi Angela,
yes it looks like we are cousins of some sort.
Joshua Kippax was my 4x gt grandfather, so does that make us cousins four times removed-----not well up on those sort of connections----Mel will know--MELLLLLL.

Hi Angela

William Foster b.1804 was married to Mary Shackleton b. 1810, married 28 Jan 1831.

Also see the Foster, Foulds grave stone at Hill Lane Chapel (Look up Grave Stones on the Home Page of Briercliffe Society) for details of their death, and look up “Foster” in Church Records to find details of William’s Birth.

I see that You have a Family Tree on Ancestry. If you look up my Family Tree “Hirst/West Family Tree” you will find more Foster details there.

Thank you very much indeed jackh. Thanks to you I have a new surname to 'play with'. I'll certainly have a look at your tree on Ancestry, I am pretty sure I made mine public if you want a good dig about in it.

Thanks again,

Angela :)

We have a William Foster, b Briercliffe 1804, on a branch of the Leaver tree that we haven't yet managed to connect to the main tree.
On the face of it, it's the same William. We have details of is descendants through 2 of his children - Edmond and Ellen. If they're of any interest to you, let me know and I'll post them on here.

That was easier than I thought it would be portia - I have details now about how the Leavers are in my tree.

Elizabeth Leaver (1830-1890) from Briercliffe married James Kippax (1817-1895) from Briercliffe on 7/11/1860.
Elizabeth had a son John Leaver (1851), he had her surname but don't quite know the story behind this yet.

I have Elizabeth's parents as William (1851) from Marsden and Betty (1810) from Briercliffe.

So just three Leavers in my tree, I hope this helps!

Interesting that you say you have details about Edmond and Ellen as children of William Foster, I only have an Ellen in my tree, born 1840. I don't suppose you have any details of Edmond?

Thanks,

Angela

Hi Angela,
James Kippax who married Elizabeth Leaver in 1860 is my 3X gt grandfather. Elizabeth is his second wife, his first being my 3X gt grandmother Mary Parker who died 1857. They are all together in grave 66L Hill Lane Churchyard. http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Gra ... Parker.htm
There is a possibility that James and Elizabeth had a child prior to his marriage to Mary, although she would have been quite young then. I believe he also had a child with another lady, Nancy Spencer in 1839. I have the details of the latter from Lancashire Records Office.
