There's a record in the IGI of William Banister (whom I believe to be my GGGg'father) marrying Betty Petty at Colne on 25 December 1809. I can't find anything else that I can tie to Betty before the marriage, and Petty is not a name I remember seeing here. I wonder if anyone can tell me anything about her, or about the name.

What a lovely name Betty Petty, it rolls off the tongue.

I know it doesn't help with your pre-marriage query but there are a couple of Petty families in the 1841 census in the Whalley district. It's not a name I can say I've noticed. I'm returning home tomorrow so I'll have a look at my fiche to see if there are many Petty's dotted about.

There's a Petty estate agent in Burnley.
I don't think I have ever noticed it in my trawl through parish registers.

Gloria, Mel,

thanks to both for your comments. I've been experimenting with searches on Lancs OPC and produced some interesting numbers: in the whole county there are 2173 BMD records of Bannisters, 240 of Nutters and 173 of Pettys - and 77 of the Pettys are in Colne!

Of course, the OPC coverage is patchy both in geography and in time (and indeed as between births, marriages and deaths) so this is not a statistically sound survey - but it gives me some more homework!

I have a surname index for St Bartholomew's at Colne, I think the years covered are 1813-1837. It does only give surname and year though - nothing else. There is one list for brides and another for grooms. It will be interesting to see how many occurrences of the name Petty crop up.
