The Liverpool Mercury Tuesday 2 March 1869 Lancashire Cognomens At the Colne petty sessions, a few days ago, an affiliation case from Trawden was brought before W. H. Wood and W. F. Ecroyd, Esqrs., in which the names of several persons resident in that village were introduced to the inquiry. To the surprise of many persons in court, the rustic witnesses did not know their own real Christian and surnames when called, but amid much laughter immediately responded to "Bill o'Dallnk's," "Harry o'Tom's," "Bob o'Davit's," and "Nanny o'Gret Jack's." |
