In the church records it has Betty Leaver as a spinster, daughter of William Leaver, so it would appear she had three children out of wedlock, and didn't get married until the age of 30yrs. Both the last statements seem very unusual.
I have never looked into this woman before, as she isn't really related to me, only as the 2nd wife of my 3X gt grandfather James Kippax.

Gloria, what year was Betty Leaver born, and was she from Briercliffe?

Kris
The censuses show her as born in Briercliffe, approx 1831. I did find an Elizabeth Leaver on the 1851 census who might fit, but the bmd marriage record shows the one we're looking for as Betty so..

Betty Leaver 41
Elizabeth Leaver 20
Mary Leaver 8
Robert Leaver 15
William Leaver 40

Betty Leaver/Kippax is on the gravestone Kippax / Parker Hill Lane, which is on the site, died Dec 12th 1890 aged 60yrs.
In the church records she married James Kippax on the 7th Nov 1860, aged 30yrs. It says spinster, of Briercliffe, and her father was William Leaver, quarryman.
In 1861 census these three Leavers were with them (amongst his own children) as stepsons
Jimmy Leaver 1
John Leaver 9
Willy Leaver 5
They are still with them in 1871 but are down as his nephews.
Any ideas????

The 1851 census I mentioned shows the father (William) as a stonecutter. Looks promising.

So do we have to presume she had these three children out of wedlock? Do you have anything as regards who the father was?

Re Kris's post about the marriages. I haven't managed to track down Nanny Leaver in 1851, but I think this is 1841:

Betty Leaver 33
Betty Leaver 10
Nanny Leaver 8
Robert Leaver 5
William Leaver 28

HO107; Piece 506; Book15; Folio: 25; Page: 5

The address is Hollin Grove
Of course 1841 doesn't show relationships so we still don't know for certain she was Betty's sister.

As far as Betty is concerned, there are a few illegitimate births in the Leaver tree but I can think of only one other where there were 3 to one mother and we're fairly sure we know the reason for that. Very odd!

Have just noticed that on the 1841 census, also at Hollin Grove, is one James Kippax aged 24. Co-incidence?

Looks like he lived right next door. As you say "coincidence" .

Looks like the Kippax and Leaver threads are getting mixed up here BUT, in the Haggate gravestones, Leaver, John died 4th April 1926 in his 75th yr. I presume this is the John son of Betty Leaver aged 9 in the 1861 census.
Does anyone have any idea of the father?

Thanks Gilly, any Kippaxs are interesting, it is surprising how they can sometimes fit in.

Didn't Sue on OGFB say to try Clitheroe if you got no joy in Burnley when looking for marriages.
I've read it somewhere too.
