Does anyone know why the name Margaret is shortened to Peggy? I have googled it and read some of the theories but wondered if anyone on here has an explanation? |

Good question! My middle name is Margaret and that was after my great-aunt Peggy. My best guess is that the Margaret was shortened to Meg...and then, as children are wont to do, it became a rhyming nickname..Meggy-Peggy. Who knows for sure....? |

I looked on google but all I could find suggested the Meggy becoming Peggy theory. Same for Mary - became Molly and then Polly. I'm not sure how an 'M' becomes a 'P'. |

There's a helpful rule of etymology: Any vowel can become any other, and consonants don't count. At least, I think that's how it goes. Charon |
