Does anyone know why the name Margaret is shortened to Peggy?
I have googled it and read some of the theories but wondered if anyone on here has an explanation?

Good question! My middle name is Margaret and that was after my great-aunt Peggy.
My best guess is that the Margaret was shortened to Meg...and then, as children are wont to do, it became a rhyming nickname..Meggy-Peggy. Who knows for sure....?

I looked on google but all I could find suggested the Meggy becoming Peggy theory. Same for Mary - became Molly and then Polly. I'm not sure how an 'M' becomes a 'P'.

There's a helpful rule of etymology: Any vowel can become any other, and consonants don't count. At least, I think that's how it goes.
