This is my first posting. My family contains the above names.Witnesses to Wills, marriages etc are Samuel Burrows,Alice Dixon,Spencer Ridehalgh,John Bolton,William Howarth. Henry Whalley married Elizabeth Hudson on 25 /12/1833 at St Bartholomews Colne.witness Joseph Whalley.I am trying to trace Henry's parents.and who Joseph is (a brother?????) Henry & Eliz. had Ann Whalley who we think married Clegg or possibly Deurden, although there is an old photo album in existence which refers to Clegg children. This album belonged to Henry & Eliz's 3rd child Martha Whalley who married Henry Broughton(a cart cover manufacturer). Henry (a farmers butcher) & Eliz also had a William Whalley who married Margaret Howarth on the same day as Martha's. Witnesses were Spencer Ridehalgh & Alice Dixon. William & Margaret Whalley are my gt gparents, they had a Henry,William,Howarth all born in Little Marsden & George (all butchers)they moved to Liverpool.William died in Liverpool at a young age just before my gfather George whalley was born in 1874. Mgt married again a Benjamin Marsh from Sheffield. The photo album also contained the death notice for Henry Whalley (the Elder) who is buried in Haggart Cemetery. I believe there is a will of Henry from Lindred Top, but have lost the details in my copious records & do not know where to get a copy from. In 1851 Henry,ELiz,Ann,William & Martha Whalley, all lived in Lindred Lane Top Little Marsden. William was then 12,they had an Aunt to Henry, living with them a Martha Thornton a widow age 74 an annuant Aunt! I cannot find any more about Martha Thornton. I was really pleased to see the photos of Haggate on this site Thankyou. This is long enough for a first posting.I have many records so may have info of interest in return. Pat |

Hi Pat, welcome to the site. A lot of info to digest there! For your missing copy of a will, assuming it's post-1858, it is possible to obtain this again. You would need to view the indexes at the LRO in Preston. To do this you need the date of death. Once you have located the reference on the index, you can write to an address in York that I don't have to hand but the staff at the LRO should be able to give to you. The cost of a copy of a will is about £5. I'm not sure if you can just write to the York address with a name and date of death and payment. If it is pre-1858 then it is still a trip to the LRO. They have the Richmond Probate index and the Chester Probate Index. One covers north of the river Ribble and the other covers south of the river. I think these are organised alphabetically and can be viewed at the LRO. You should also be able to get copies of these from ther LRO. I have some records for Haggate so will take a look for any Whalley references and post them on the forum later. |

viewtopic.php?f=17&t=2216 No sign of a Henry Whalley but the stone is possibly either eroded or no longer standing. |

I have ref no for wills of Joseph Whalley Little Marsden died 1769 diocese Chester & William Whalley Heyhead Little Marsden a Yeoman, died Mar 1824 Chester again so will send off to LRO as you suggest. When I get them if they are of any interest I will post details on this site. Thank you also for looking at Haggate records This has made me determined to get my research in some sort of order have been researching for nearly 30 yrs for my mothers birth cert. Vera Margaret Whalley born to George Whalley ( Marsh) & Eliza Twigg in Liverpool circa 1910 she never knew when her birthday was, makes me even more determined but something odd as no sign yet & no sign of her with them in 1911 census !!! Thanks again Pat |

That does sound odd Pat. Is there not a relative that you could quiz? |

Hi Pat, how sad her not knowing her birth date. Just a thought, but could it be possible that she was adopted? |

Who is with them in the 1911 census? Did George Whalley ever marry Eliza Twigg? |

Pat The only recorded marriage I can find for an Eliza Twigg and George Whalley is W Derby, 3rd qr 1914. Is this them? If so, could your mother's birth date have been later than 1910? Or maybe she was registered as something other than Whalley. that said, I can't find a Vera Margaret of any surname. Maybe it hasn't been transcribed yet. |

Wow,Thankyou for all your replies. In 1911 George Whalley (butcher)& Eliza Twigg (Housekeeper)are living unmarried in Botanic Rd Liverpool with a maid,by 1914 they are married (have w cert) & living in a smaller house Ramilies rd.(from Gores Directory,No sign of Vera Mgt. My mother did say she moved from a house with a maid to a small house without maid when she was four,& it was for this reason she never cleaned our house!!!! I am also looking in Vera mgt Marsh Whalley area as the butchers shop George managed in Smithdown Rd was Marsh butchers named after his mothers second husband. We do have a book bound in suede of Tennyson poems inscribed to Mrs Marsh Whalley from I or J Fine ( do not know if this is to Georges mother or to Eliza ( plot thickens!!!!!!!!!)Also have a photo taken in johannesburg S Africa labelled Mother,Freda, Mary (I think these are the Fine family who I have traced Freda coming back 2x on ship also an Isaac Fine a bookbinder Russian Jew in Islington London in 1901)Did wonder if Vera could have been left behind with Eliza & George as she had epilepsy.who knows, but we wont give up. We have 4 dog eared photos of Mum as a baby & child taken in a studio in Greenbank Liverpool she used to look at them often. Enough about that ...I have 2 marriage certs now may be of interest to Clegg & Deurden families so trying to work out where I put this info on this site ???? Pat |
