| Post subject: | Urgent search for Hargreaves for 100th birthday |
My grandmother Annie Abija Grant (nee Wilcock), who resides in Sydney, Australia, is 100 on September 15, 2009. She was born in 1909 at 47 Clifton Street, Burnley, the daughter of CLARA HARGREAVES and Joseph William Wilcock. The family migrated to NSW, Australia, around 1911/12. Clara died some 8-10 years later. Annie lost all contact with the Hargreaves family during World War II. Her mother Clara Hargreaves was the daughter of William, a “beer seller” and Anne, and had a number of siblings including Albert, who possibly migrated to New Zealand, William, who married Ada, John, Frank and Mary. Given my grandmother’s age I am desperate to find any living relatives or know of her family's stories over the past century - it would truly be the best birthday present I could give her. I would appreciate any help as I live in Hong Kong and I have never been to Lancashire. I've put ads in the Burnley Express over the past week and a very kind gentleman who saw them suggested I post on this site. My email is susansams@mac.com. Thanks, Susan |

Thank you so much Leaver. I only had the 1881 census. There's a couple of other siblings that my Grandmother did not recall so I can look into those as well but as I keep being told, that area is teaming with Hargreaves so . . . Would anyone know how I might look into which pub William Hargreaves may have owned? My next stop is Google to see what may have been there or near to the address listed in 1901. Does anyone know what that area is now - is it still residential, any chance that that house may still be standing? I'm very new to this and am not familiar with Burnley as I have never been to Lancashire. What was it like in the early 1900s? Thank you. Susan |

Hi Susan, have you seen this map of Burnley? http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/environmen ... urnley.htm If you go to the Eastern map of Burnley, and scroll all the way to the bottom right corner, you will see Fulledge Mill, and if you go north of Fulledge Mill (just south of Turf Moor Football Ground), you will see Anne Street and Higgin street where the Hargreaves lived in the 1881/91 Census. I’m not very familiar with this area of Burnley, so perhaps someone on the forum can tell you if these streets still exist. As for the Pub where William Hargreaves worked, this link will give you an indication of just how many pubs there are near the Turf Moor Football Ground http://www.park-road.u-net.com/pubbfc5.htm . Burnley Inns and Taverns might mention William Hargreaves, does anyone have a copy of this book? http://www.thehistorypress.co.uk/Defaul ... uctID=3754 If you would like to see some old photos of Burnley, then check out the photo section here http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Photo%20Archive.htm What part of Sydney does your Grandma live? I lived in the Western suburbs (Riverstone) and worked at Parramatta. |

Hi Susan, have you tried contacting Burnley library? http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/libraries/ ... me=burnley Maybe they are able to help with some of the info you wish to find. Another forum that might be worth posting on is http://www.oneguyfrombarlick.co.uk/ It has a larger membership than this one with members from all over the world (including Burnley). Hope your hunt is successful! |

If you look on multimap (see link at end of message) you can see Higgin St and a pub at the top where it joins Brunshaw Rd opposite the football ground. A lot of the pub is extensions, but there is an old bit at the back which can be seen on the map. Anne St is now only a little street. But I think it used to run from Todmorden Rd and join Higgin St behind/in front of the pub. The pub's name I cannot remember but I don't think it is the original name. Burnley library would definitely be able to help you with this one. http://www.multimap.com/maps/?qs=Higgin ... 20BB10%204 |

| Post subject: | Re: Urgent search for Hargreaves for 100th birthday - which pub? |
Hi Susan, In the General & Commercial Directory of Burnley, Nelson (etc) of 1896, p201, under Beerhouses, you can find the Craven Heifer at 17 Holden St, (licensee) William Hargreaves. In the 1901 Census the Hargreaves family lived at nos 13 and 15 Holden St, but there is no entry for no 17 , presumably because no-one actually lived in the pub. There is also the Park View Inn 3 Higgin St, (licensee) Thomas Hargreaves. This is where the family, including Thomas, lived in 1881 and 1891. I can't find Joseph on the 1911 census at all, although I found what I believe to be Clara and her mother at 2 Hind St Burnley. WILCOCK, CLARA. HEAD MARRIED (3 years). age 34. Occupation MIXED GROCERY AND CONFECTIONERY, born BURNLEY LANCS WILCOCK, ANNIE. DAUGHTER age 1. Born BURNLEY LANCS Maybe when they went to Australia he went on ahead? If there are any relatives out there, they may remember that someone in their family had a grocer's shop on Hind St. Good luck Susan |

Susan Clara (aged 34) and Anne (aged 2) Wilcock sailed from Liverpool on 4 May 1912 aboard the White Star ship Persic, bound for Sydney NSW. Clara gave her occupation as Housewife. Also on the passenger list is a Wm Wilcock aged 22, Bookseller (who may or may not be related). Charon |
