There is a surname report here http://surname.sofeminine.co.uk/w/surna ... waite.html It does appear to be a northern name if that link is anything to go by. |

I don't know if this site has been on here before but it's an interesting one for surnames. http://www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk/ The site gives the distribution pattern of a surname in 1881 and 1998. Joan |

According to a BBC site, 'thwaite' means clearing, or tilled land, and is of Scandinavian origin. I checked Braithwaite, Postlethwaite and Cornthwaite, names I remember from schooldays, on the National Trust names site. All are northern names in 1881, and Cornthwaite and Postlethwaite are mainly in Lancashire. Joan |

The BBC site does refer to Vikings Hannah! Place names ending in 'thwaite' probably referred originally to settlements created by Viking families moving from other villages. Joan |
