I have Jude Shoesmith born 1837 in Colne married to Mary Stansfield 31/1/1761 which I got from Colne Parish records - but I note in the marriages on here her husband is John Shoesmith. Jude's daughter Peggy was my 4x gt. grandmother she married Richard Nutter at St. Barts, Colne 1797 |

Moh, that could be (& probably is) my error. I viewed Colne records at my local LDS library a few years ago and I remember what hard work the earlier registers were, very faint and hard to read writing. |

......and the complexity of that boggles my mind! I noticed almost at the end where a "Florence Halstead was taken to America by her grandmother and Robert Halstead". Where would a person begin to decipher where they went in America...and look there for descendants? |

It would be a case of looking on the first U.S. census after they went to America for the right family Sue. I think stories passed down the generations would not include specific detail like towns or counties. The Us would have been such a huge adventure that it was enough to say "They went to America". I have a personal family tree website for each of my grandparents. I have had quite a few people contact me from the US over the years because they have the same surname as my nan and they have been told they originate in England....therefore we must be related and you must help me with my research! |

Suzy, if you know the approximate time someone went to either Canada or the US you might be able to find their immigration record (eg. shipping to NY) on www.ancestry.com – this normally has the final destination, from here you could look at the census records. |

Depending on when a person immigrated to the U.S., there's the Ellis Island site at http://www.ellisisland.org The U.S. kept records of immigrants who entered the country via the Port of New York, mostly between 1892 and 1924. The passenger search is free. Last November when I was in New York, we sailed past Ellis Island on the ferry from Manhattan to New Jersey. On the return journey we sailed toward the Island and the Statue of Liberty, much as millions of immigrants must have done. One couldn't help but think about them. It's a historic site now but unfortunately we weren't able to stop. Halifax in Nova Scotia has a similar site for immigrants to Canada. Joan |

Thanks for these resources.... Joan, the EllisIsland one was so interesting....found Florrie Halstead (age 15) who was taken to U.S. by her grandmother Elizabeth Ellen Halstead...same 2 mentioned in the Shoesmith tree at the very end..... |
