Hi, I am trying to find out about my paternal grandfather's family who lived in Harl Syke. He was John Arthur Proctor born 1901. His parents were Grace Elizabeth Smith and Arthur Proctor b. 1882. I am trying to find Arthur's parents - this is quite difficult as I understand he was brought up by a gentleman called George Eastwood and his family after his mother became ill. Arthur had two brothers Rennie and Walter and a sister Clara - were they also brought up by the Eastwood family? I know Arthur was in WW1 and won the Military Medal - I also know that Clara came to live with him and look after him in Garstang after his second wife died (not sure who she was). Clara never married - but had two sons - who were they? I also know the family went to Haggate Chapel if that is of any help. John Arthur is buried there (d.1956). If anyone can help I would be greatful. Thanks |

Hi, have you looked at the 1891 census? was he with the Eastwoods then? The Eastwood family could very well have been related to the Smiths or Proctors, and that would give the reason for them bringing up the children. On Lancashirebmd there are two births which could be his, if the year is correct Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1882 Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Reference PROCTER Arthur James Burnley Preston BU/144/89 PROCTER Arthur Burnley Preston BU/145/87 It might be worth sending for one of these. Where did you find his year of birth? Hope this helps. Gloria |

On Lancashirebmd there are a few Clara and Walter Proctors who could be his siblings, and a couple of Rennies, but the latter were registered at Colne. |
