from an online source: The name Halstead is derived from the Old English hald (refuge, shelter) and stede (site, place), meaning 'safe place' or 'place of refuge'. My grt.grandfather was James HALSTEAD - born in Briercliffe in approx 1867 and resident with his family at Jackwell House in 1871 (source 1871 census). Through marriage the Halsteads were connected to the Duerdens and the Sutcliffes to mention but two names. Analysis of the census suggests that the family may have been in Jackwell House for more than 50 years. The 1901 census indicates that some members of the family had left Jackwell House and were living nearby: (unmarried?) sisters Anne aged 45 and Jane Halstead aged 42 with Jane's 18 year old daughter Emma were living at no. 22 Talbot Street. at this very useful site: British History on line .. http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report ... mpid=53154 Townships Briercliffe with Extwistle we learn that the Halsteads have been associated with the region for a very long time - more than 600 years? So just maybe there may be some cousins reading this? any help at all with this branch of my family would be most welcome .. Robert |

Bob, can you provide details of any of the Sutcliffes? I have quite a large file of Sutcliffe for Briercliffe and Barrowford area. Just wondered if any of your Halsteads are appearing in it? |

I've had a look at my file. I have a Fred Halstead born about 1872 in Burnley marrying a Mary Sutcliffe, according to census they have a daughter Ada. Also a Mary Halstead born in Liverpool married Frankland Sutcliffe of Roughlee. They had a 3 children, 1 a son by the name of Sutcliffe Halstead. I think this one is in Leavers line... Rhoda Halstead married Alwyn Sutcliffe, they had a daughter Barbara. |

Bob, A little further back with the Halsteads, I have Elizabeth Halstead married William Nicholl on 9 March, 1834, at St. Peter's, Burnley. Both were said to be of this Chapelry, and both made marks. There's no other information about Elizabeth. |

Jack Halstead (born 1916) in Briercliffe (my father aged 90) Son (only child) of: James Halstead of Briercliffe and Esther Mary Gudgeon of Burnley James was one of 2 sons and 1 daughter of John Robert Halstead born 1871 married Martha Hirst (born Pennsylvania 1873) 1894. Other children of John Robert were Edwin (moved to Balckpool with wife Doris) and Elizabeth (married Willie Mason) and lived in Briercliffe. John Robert's parents were Robert Halstead of Briercliffe who married Ellen of Burnley John Robert's siblings were Tabitha,James, Mary Again, Martha Hirst, who was born in Pennsylvania, was the daughter of Betty Hirst (nee Brierley) of Briercliffe. Betty and her husband must have moved to the US with 3 daughters, then had Martha, returning to Burnley area when Martha was about 5, as there was another daughter, Ada, born in Burnley . There's more...but thought this might be enough for someone else to find a connection with my tree. Susan Kerr (nee Halstead) Canada |

Susan Kerr has sent loads of postcards and photographs to the Briercliffe Society complete with notes she has taken while asking her Dad who is in the pictures. Many of them are Halsteads and Hirsts but there are also other local names. I am gradually adding them to the main site. I have added quite a few but there are still more to add. They can be found at http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Briercliffe%20People_205.php but please keep checking back! Thank you so much Sue, and your Dad Jack. |
