Post subject:  Leivers Surname

I had relatives that came from Nottinghamshire to America in the early 20th century. They worked in the lace mills here in Wyoming, Richmond, and Alton, Rhode Island in the USA. They left their little baby behind--Winnifred Leivers. Their names were George and Marion(Kirk) Leivers. The siblings of "Winnie" were Robert John and Georgia. These people are all deceased now (as I believe Marion is). Can anyone draw a connection to any of these people or to the last name "Leivers" and the Leavers lace machines? Winnifred would have been a great Aunt.

Thanks,

Courtney

Welcome to the forum Courtney.

I guess it could be a variation of Leaver though it's not one I've spotted before.

How sad that they left the baby behind. That must have been difficult for the family

I wonder if Kris or Maureen know anything about this-----they both have Leaver connections. Don't know how often they come on here now though.

Kris hasn't been on for a couple of years. Maureen pops in from time to time

Well, it can't hurt to try, I guess. Yes, it must have been so hard to leave a baby! But, I guess if better opportunities come along, in the long run, it is best for you kids? I don't know! I would love to know more and that is why I am on this site.

Thanks,

Courtney

Maureen has just returned from a long holiday, I'll send her an email about this topic - you never know, she may know something. As you say, it's always worth a try!

Hi Courtney
As Mel says, I've just come back from a longish trip but now I'm thrilled to be back from the hot sunshine to Lancashire's cold, damp beauty
I've checked my tree but don't have any Leivers - in fact that's one variation I haven't seen before.
I know that at one time Kris (Leaver) seemed to be collecting every Lever/ Leaver he could find, with the aim of connecting them all up at some point but I've stuck more closely to people I thought might belong to my tree. So it's remotely possible he may have something but sadly I haven't heard from him for quite some time.
I did a quick root round and I'd say the name is either originally French or Jersais.
Is it more recent family you're trying to find, or are you looking to trace your family back in time?
Best regards
Maureen
