Hi

I was looking through the Lancashire Online Parish Records for information on the Smith side of my family in Marsden/Briercliffe/Burnley and came across Shackleton Greenwood's marriage to Mary Whittaker in 1845 which states his father as Bernard Smith, joiner. My 3 x great grandfather was a Bernard Smith a joiner living in the Briercliffe area at that time and wonder if there is a connection?

My Bernard Smith married Sarah Spencer in 1824.
Their children I know of were:
James - 1825
Betty - 1829
Margaret -1832
John - 1841

Would anyone know more about Shackleton and his parentage?

Many thanks for any help.
Colleen

This is the marriage you mentioned
Marriage: 13 Oct 1845 St James, Briercliffe, Lancashire, England
Shackleton Greenwood - (X), Full, Weaver, Bachelor, Finnymoor Foot, Briercliffe
Mary Whittaker - (X), Full, Weaver, Spinster, Finnymoor Foot, Briercliffe
Groom's Father: Bernard Smith, Joiner
Bride's Father: William Whittaker, Weaver
Witness: James Greenwood, (X); Martha Whittaker, (X)
Married by Banns by: J. Mc Lindon
Register: Marriages 1843 - 1911, Page 33, Entry 66

I wonder if the witness James Greenwood is the brother of Shackleton, and the same James you have as son of Bernard Smith?

The 1841 census has:

Foot, Briercliffe with Extwistle
John Catlow, 30, Weaver
GRACE, 36
John, 9
James, 5
SH GREENWOOD, 17
William Greenwood, 21

Grace Greenwood spinster married John Catlow on 15th August, 1831 at St. Peters, Burnley.

Thanks both for your replies - much appreciated.
Interesting theories and I'll investigate further to see if I can find the link.

There are a great many Greenwoods originating over the border in Yorkshire. If you believe many of the family trees available online, almost every Greenwood in the north of england seems to originate in the Heptonstall area. "Shackleton" is also a name found in Stansfield (part of modern Todmorden), and the first name "Grace" pops up a lot in the Greenwood families. It may be worth slipping over the border to help with your reseaches.....

Greenwood is the most common surname in the Heptonstall Parish Records (followed closely by Sutcliffe.)

It's not that far from Briercliffe/Burnley and the cloth trade(?) gave cause for the two areas to mingle.
