Kris, this Elizabeth Sutcliffe could be the daughter of Simeon Sutcliffe and Jane Leaver. It is only a possibility though.
In 1871 she (daughter of Simeon and Jane) was at R10/4152 folio 17 pg 27 Lane Bottom

Gloria, would you? that would be great.

I'm looking for James Whitaker, a farmer. The marriage cert of his daughter is 1860. She was 28 years at the time of her marriage, so was born approx 1832. Assuming he was say 20 at the time (assuming) of her birth that would make him born abt 1812 ish.

I know nothing more about him, other than the marriage was in Burnley.

Do you think it's a bit strange that she named her father as James Whitaker when her name was Sarah Greenwood? I can't work it out. Sarah had a child out of wedlock herself and didn't name the father ...don't you think it irregular?

Something else ... Sarah's mother is Betty Greenwood (unproven), a widow.

Were there any census before 1841?

Glenys

As I understand it there was at least one before 1841 but I believe it was purely statistical and didn't have information - such as names - that would be of use to family historians.

A census was taken in 1801, 1811, 1821 and 1831 but as you say Stephanie, these were purely statistical and, so I believe, are of very little use to the family historian.

I am also under the impression that there are few available, they were destroyed or damaged. I may be wrong!

Thanks Gloria, yes I have the 1851 with Betty and the gang! Can you see any sign of her on the 1841? I had limited time at the Genealogy Centre and I think from memory failed to find them on the 1841.
