I've just been speaking to a friend of mine who is 94 years old. She went to the Band of Hope at Tennyson St School. You had to sign the pledge. People read poems and they had tea parties.

Sue I think your dad must have been wishing he was in the Commercial. Doesn't sound much fun does it!

My friend Alice won the Dr Muir's medal for being the head girl at Haggate school in 1926.

We had one teacher at Haggate School who I think would be arrested today. I remember she took a particular dislike to one boy in my class. He was always in trouble getting the pump on a regular basis but one day I remember she made him stand in front of the blackboard which was one of those old fashioned revolving ones. He had to face the class then she went around the back and whacked it down on the top of his head!

You mean of the Lanehead book Judi? We haven't found out. Syke mentioned on another thread that he thought the author wasn't in good health.

The Burnley Gazette

Wednesday January 30 1895

Haggate Band of Hope.

The anual teaparty in connection with this society was held on Saturday in the Haggate Baptist School, when about 540 persons partook of tea. In the evening and entertainment was given. Mr. John hudson, Leeds, gave a temperance address. The anthem "Look not upon the wine" was sung by the Baptist Glee party, led by Mr. John Foster. A number of infants of the Briercliffe Board School went through the musical bells drill, led by the infant mistress, Miss A. M. Kydd, and accompanied on the piano by Miles Frost. A violin solo "Air Varie" was given by Mr. W. Burrows, Miss J. sutcliffe sung "The Drunkard's Child" and "Loves old Sweet Song," accompanied by Mr. H. Nuttall. Action songs and recitations were given by members of the Band of Hope. A dialogue by seven boys entitled "Professor Parker and his wax models" was gone through in capital style. Mr. D. Nuttall occupied the chair.
