Do you think there is a possibility that Corrin and Banks are the surnames of the people in the photo, as it doesn't say BY-------just
Corrin and Banks Briercliffe
There were families with those names in Briercliffe.
Just a bit of lateral thinking

I wonder if Roger would know? I'm going to try again tomorrow to get hold of him about our books so I'll ask. Bit of a long shot but I think they produced some postcards and he does collect local ones on behalf of the BS. |

I spoke to Roger just now. He doesn't know of the firm, but thought that the Corrin was the son of the Corrin who was the schoolmaster - the one the clock was erected in honour of. He reckons Burnley photographic society will know as they have extensive records of all the photographers in the area. So that's my next port of call. Meanwhile if he's right about the Corrin, that would give a clue as to the time. |

Yes, that's the family but it's a bit of a mystery. There were 5 sons, Samuel Wilberforce, Thomas Wilson, John Keble, William Phillip & Stephen Keble. John died aged 2, so it wasn't him. Samuel was a joiner and by 1901 (aged 40) was living in Barrow-in-Furness so it probably wasn't him. That leaves Thomas, William & Stephen. In 1891 Thomas was a warehouseman living in Briercliffe, then I lose him till he dies in South Africa 1922. 1901 William was a blacksmith in Briercliffe. 1891 Stephen was only 11. I lose him after that till he dies in 1960. I think Roger's right about it being one of this family - they're the only Corrins in Briercliffe and it's a Manx name. But which one? Anyway I'd say we're looking at late 1800s but most likely early 1900s. Still looking. |

Possible, but it seems a bit coincidental for such an unusual name? Roger gave me a contact name at Burnley library but she wasn't in when I rang just now. Should be in this afternoon so I'll ring back later. |

I haven't forgotten about this - I asked to speak to the lady in question when I was in the elibrary last week but she was on leave. I just rang this afternoon but it's her day off. I think she's called (Pimper) Nell. |

I spoke to the librarian today but she couldn't help. She looked through trade directories for 1840-1940 but could find no Corrin and Banks. Also in another one for 1897-1902. There are 2 or 3 more directories she said we could try but it doesn't sound hopeful. |

Spoke to my friend Alice who was 95 this week. She has marvellous memory but says in her lifetime there has never been a photographers in Briercliffe. Also I was thinking if there had been a shop it would say Harle-Syke as that was the village. Remains a mystery. |

I've had another look at the photo. Is it possible that the board it's mounted on was not the photographer's, but something that was added later? |

Perhaps it was a new business venture and wasn't successful so never ended up in the directories. Where did the Corrin family live? If someone set up a photographic business it would have cost quite alot of money in those days, possibly it could have been an interest to the schoolmasters youngest son Stephen. |
