:?: Trying to work out how to find details of a great uncle who was living in Harle Syke on the 1911 census with his wife Susannah, son Morris at his father in law's house, father in law's name John Banks.

The gt.uncle was Benjamin Eastwood. They emigrated sometime in the 1920's to Tasmania?
How do I find which ship and the year? :|

Ben born 1882 on Brennand St Burnley. :?

He fought in Boer War, came home, joined WW1 in 1915, came home, decided the climate was better abroad than here and sailed with family to Tasmania where he appears to have got a job with Cadbury's  I thought they only operated from Bournville area, so much for my knowledge as a chocoholic. He is not on the 1901 census, so probably in S. Africa?
His family out there have no records of his travel date.

He is not popping up on the website you suggested.

Unfortunately I cannot find the shipping record for Banjamin’s trip to Australia. He probably sailed via Sydney or Perth before he arrived at his final destination, although this doesn’t help you much.

Do you have a photo of Benjamin Eastwood? If so, it would be nice to add him to the soldier page http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Soldiers.htm

:| Just an afterthought, Benjamin joined and went out to the Boer War, his mother according to his sister's diary, didn't want him to go and paid for him to get out of the army and come home. He duly signed up again and went back! I assumed he was under age but have realised when I compared dates, that he was about 18! Where are there records for the Boer War that would tell me about this patriotic relative.

Also does anyone know how long it would take to sail from London to Australia at that time.

In the 1920s, the voyage to Australia took about 5 or 6 weeks: http://museumvictoria.com.au/journeys/1900_20s.asp

There's always Find My Past. Other than that, I can only think of the NAtional Archives at Kew but I think that needs a personal visit.

Hi and thanks to everyone who pointed me in the right direction for military links. Have been contacted by a nice guy in Finland who in turn had contacted a Lieutenant Colonel, the historian for regiment that an ancestor fought in. I have eight long pages of the old relatives war exploits, info. I would have never have found without your help. :D
