Sandygate Mill was completely built by 1862 it was high up behind the former Waterloo Hotel and was a three storey building, a later addition in the roof space was added giving it another floor. The mill was burnt out a few years back, but the blackened state left is still around I think, well it was up to 2008 anyway. It was last occupied by Lord's printers. Blakey & Nephews Ltd also worked Sandygate mill in 1923. The Sandygate Mill Co Ltd worked the mill in 1945. Sandygate mill was built to be a weaving shed and had a floor space of 2,170 yards. There was also warehouse storage covering 2,000 yards floor space which stretched over two floors. Water to supply the Lancashire boiler was got from the nearby Leeds and Liverpool canal, steam from the boiler ran a 250 horse power beam engine. Stephanie. |

Hi, if you google SandyGate Mill Burnley, quite a few references come up about it. Also on Multimap there is a birds eye view of the area, well worth a look at. If you go on the weavers triangle website they would probably be able to give you loads of info--worth a try---http://www.weaverstriangle.co.uk/ And, if you give us some names we may be able to find exactly where they lived from the censuses, unless you already have them that is. I tried to go down the route of finding employment records but drew a complete blank. Maybe Burnley library could advise as to the existence and possible whereabouts of any records? |

Leaver wrote: What was Grandfathers name and when was he born? .My grandfathers name was Robert Taylor and his future wife was Lily May Gregory, born 1879 and 1880 respectively. Also I believe Lily May's brother Stansfield was also an employee at the mill.

The relations I am trying to find out about are Robert Taylor(b.1879) Lily May Gregory(b.1880) and Stansfield Gregory.Robert and Lily went on to marry in 1903 when Robert lived at 24 Tay Street and Lily lived at 24 Lord Streeet. They all worked at Sandygate Mill but I don't know in what capacity or when. |
