My grandfather, Robert Taylor, received a book of Tennyson poems for attendance at Mount Olivet P.S.A, with an address inside of Ivy Dene, Scott Park Road. Can anyone throw any light on this?

Small amount of info which may be useful - Mount Olivet was a Baptist Church on the corner of Plover and Broughton St overlooking Whitlefield Recreation Ground. It was demolished around 20 years ago and two bungalows built on the land. A small war memorial remains in situ. Can't at present offer anything else.

I have found a number of references to PSA standing for Pleasant Sunday Afternoon. This appears to have been a term for cultural activities organised by non-conformist churches in the late Victorian era to promote reading, music and the like - a sort of non-religious (or not very religious) Sunday School or Workers' Educational Association movement. One reference was to the conversion of a Methodist PSA Hall to a cinema around 1910.

Here's a reminiscence of a PSA in Hyde, Cheshire - I guess in the 1940s or 50s: " The PSA, (Pleasant Sunday Afternoon) a reformers answers to men languishing in the pubs and families left at home. Until the day it closed it was only 1d (old penny) to get in and enjoy all the activities with a cup of tea and biscuits thrown in."

This site (Francis Frith) is well worth browsing for books of old pictures, especially as they are being sold off at big reductions at present. Or you can just look at some of the pictures at no cost.

I should have realised that the temperance movement was one of the reasons for the PSA!
