Does anyone remember a graveyard in Brierfield which was dug up for redevelopment. I think it happened in the mid fifties. I seem to remember that if one approached it from Kings Causeway, went over the cross roads with Marsden Rd it was on the right. I think there may be a garden there now. Does anyone know to which church it belonged and what happened to the remains. |

Hi Gill, if you go on http://mario.lancashire.gov.uk/ go into the aerial photos of 1940 it is there then, but I don't know what church it belonged to. Isn't the Quaker church just down Marsden Rd, I wonder if it belonged to them? |

You can see it on multimap as well, and it shows a birds eye view. |

http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Gra ... Ground.htm Is this what was a graveyard? You pointed it out to me once Gloria. There is a graveyard on the brow of the hill near to and opposite the Golf Club entrance, Kings Causeway area. |

Thanks Mel and Gloria for responding. I,ve clicked on Mario and got an old OS map which says it's Providence Congregational Chapel. I wonder where the remains were put. I seem to remember my mother saying that one of our relatives was moved, but which one from a cast of hundreds? |

The one I sent you to Mel was on the other side of the road a tad further down towards Brierfield. But I wonder if it was to do with the same thing. Where is there a graveyard up Kings Causeway Mel? We lived near the golf club for a short while and I don't remember one, or are you thinking of Marden Heights, didn't think that had a graveyard either. |

Now you are getting too technical! I just know I see it on the left on the way to the meeting. Looking at google maps, though I cannot actually see the graveyard (looks different from above) it probably is Marsden Heights. It is in the region of Height Croft |

Family search site has this http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... gland%2C+P Might be worth contacting Burnley Library to see if they can shed any light as to where they were moved to. |

There was also another one down Halifax Rd, Brierfield on the left next to semi detatched cottages, it has been a small garden type sitting area for a long, long time. |

I think that is where this plaque is http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Gra ... Ground.htm It's difficult to tell from the overhead maps because of the tree coverage but I think the photo of the plaque was taken on the corner opposite Mansfield Crescent. (Is this where the new Google streetmap thing would come in useful?) |

Thought I'd pass on what I found out on case it helps others. Fred Stewart bereavement services officer for Pendle told me that the Providence graveyard was landscaped but non of the graves were disturbed. Only memorials were moved to the corners of the graveyard. Then Nelson Library asked the Burnley Family History society to check the monumental inscriptions as they hold the records. Sure enough I found 5 relatives in two graves ( always listen to what mother says!!) |
