Can anyone help me sort out this person's marital history please.

Mary Frances Fildes was born 6th July 1896 in Bolton. Date taken from her death certificate.

In 1916 she married James Ernest Bates of Briercliffe in Ebenezer Chapel in Halifax Road. This couple had 5 children up to 1924 including twin boys that year.

In 1962 she became the second wife of Harry Stuttard born Briercliffe in 1897. But her surname at that marriage was Scholfield. Harry died in January 1963 and is buried in st James' churchyard, Mary died in 1979.

Can anyone identify for me her second husband named Scholfield, when and where they married and when and where both husbands - James Ernest Bates and the unknown Scholfield - died (or divorced if the marriage was not terminated by the husband's death) If there were any further children I would be grateful to learn of them also.

Thanks in advance

Geoff Stuttard

I have looked for the death of Fred Scholfield from their marriage in 1958 to her third marriage in 1962 and cannot find it. I would have thought it extremely doubtful that she had any children by her other husbands due to her age.
Hope this is of some help.
Gloria

Hi Geoff

My maiden name was Barbara Bates and I am the youngest of 6 children. My father was Ernest Bates (deceased) and he was a twin. My Grandmother was Mary Stuttard and was my only surviving grandparent, she passed away when I was I was seventeen. I hope I can shed some light on your questions regarding Grandma.

Having just spoken to my mother I can tell you that the reason you can find no record of Fred Scholfield's death is because he passed away in Africa, while he and Grandma were visiting his daughter. Mary did not have any other children and only four survived into adulthood namely Elsie, Fanny, Ernest and Edward. I believe the first born child Fred died in infancy. Grandma had a large and extended family and was a formidable matriarch and a memorable lady.

I hope this is helpful.

Best wishes
Barbara
