Patricia, can you have a look for J. Slater’s Ale, 209 Colne Road in your trade directory please? I think it was a public house, but I am not certain.

Slater’s Ale can be seen behind the steam tram. http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Pho ... 20Tram.htm

Yes, the address can be seen in the window, so I know that much, but there is no mention of Slater’s Ale in Burnley Inns and Taverns. Perhaps it was a brewery.

I think it would be on the Burnley side of Duke Bar going off the number.

Thanks Patricia. What year is your directory, is it 1916?

Does this mean it was on the corner of Brennand street?

Wouldn't have thought it was that far up Kris.

Directory is 1914.

The premises where on Colne Road between to streets, Brennand Street is still there but a few of the others have gone, the end of Brennand Street, although still comes out on to Colne Road, no longer has the buildings. If that makes sense.

Perhaps, but why does it mention Brennand street? I would think that this means it was on the corner of Brennand street and Colne road.

I cannot find this family in the 1901 census.

In the directory every house on a street or road is in order, odds and evens, so if you were walking along the street and crossed a road coming in from the side, it tells you were, its a bit like a map, but no pictures.

Oh, and my 2 x great Grandparents, John Leaver (1852-1904) and Mary Sutcliffe (1855-1884) died at 61, Brennand street.

The side of the building would have been on Brennand Street, but the front would have been on Colne Road.

I don't know if I'm explaining this very well :?
