They are two separate cemeteries Charon. Hill Lane was a 'splinter group' from Haggate in the 1800's. The burial records were on the same fiche, titled 'Haggate and Hill Lane'. Haggate Cemetery http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Gra ... Chapel.htm is a large cemetery in Haggate, just off Nelson Road. Hill Lane cemetery http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Gra ... Chapel.htm is on Halifax Road, past Lane Bottom. The Chapel at Hill Lane still stands and is in use. Haggate Chapel was demolished a few years ago because of the cost of repair. The Haggate Chapel members now meet in one of the old Haggate school rooms. |

Mel, many thanks for that clear and helpful explanation. The reason I asked is that some of my Stanworth relatives-by-marriage are on the H & HL fiche (I think you posted the info, but can't at present find the post) and I wondered how to find the grave. Now I know it's in one cemetery or the other! The reference is "Haggate and Hill Lane Cemetery Section F Grave 10 ". Is there a way of locating the plot more precisely, please? Charon |

Section F is Haggate. Hill Lane seems to be section L only. This is the Stanworth burials topic viewtopic.php?f=17&t=269 |

Judging by the photograph of the gravestone at Section F grave 43, I think the tombstone is in the old section that backs on to Halifax Road. Haggate cemetery gates are now located on Nelson Road but the cemetery stretches behind the properties on the corner of Haggate and down onto Halifax Road which is where the original chapel in the 1700's stood. The gate to the Halifax Road part is now locked and the area fenced off as it is dangerous. |

Mel, many thanks again. One of my cousins who is a Stanworth descendant was hunting for Stanworth graves recently but drew a blank. The ground is very unstable, you could find yourself down a hole looking at one of your ancestors.

I actually found that the ground became rather better the more one went into the area. Only a few feet in from the fence, however, was when I nearly fell down a hole. Didn't really want to see what was awaiting me, either! What is it about the ground in that area that makes the grave sites so liable to collapse? I've never noticed such dramatic sinking before, and I've been to a, frankly, unrealistic number of decaying churchyards in my time! |

I agree with you Stephen. It is one of the worst that I have visited too. Could it be related to the quarrying that went on in the area years ago? |

I don't think there was any quarrying around there, although I may be wrong. It is at the top of a steep slope so maybe there is some erosion/slip underneath. |
