When a new Monarch is crowned, Pendle Hill like all other high places throughout the British Isles, light a bonfire as part of the celebrations.

I've found a reference to a bonfire on Ilfracoombe;s highest hill when our current Monarch took the crown so this could well be true.

The beacon on Pendle Hill was also lit in 1588 as part of a chain to signal the arrival of the Spanish Armada and the biggest ever was to celebrate Queen Victoria's diamond Jubilee.
I'm sure there have been beacon chains lit within my time but I can't remember when or why.

There was a beacon chain thing in either 1988 or 1989. I was in my final years of school and I remember the school organising an event on the hills above us. I don't remember what it was in aid of though.

I know there was a chain right across the EU on millenium night, just not sure whether it included Pendle Hill
