[G = Girl, others boys presumably] [note how the earnings do total 18/6] 3 beds 'they have buried one in the fever 2 weeks since' '4 and 8 stockings' [their needs] '8 and 12 poorly at present' [these numbers refer to ages]

My article showed a strong correlation or earnings with age (coming down again for those later in life), and this is well illustrated here.

Amazing, no wonder people had such a short life expectancy.

I was googling for "Just an Ordinary Briercliffe Family" when I came across Poverty in North East Lancashire in 1843 under www.localpopulationstudies.org.uk--------by Rex Watson. For some reason my computer can no longer copy and paste from the address bar or I would have put the whole thing on.

No 86 John SUTCLIFFE Haggate Weaver for MOORE aged 25, others 23 and 1 He earns 4/- a week, she 1/- (I think, not quite clear). (Needs : 'Mans clogs and stockings and wife stockings')

No 104 Widow SUTCLIFFE Hill End Weaver for William SMITH aged 49, others 22 (male) and 11 (girl) [but see below] (Needs : '22 been in the fever and was never out of doors from 8th to 12th month [this is February 1843] . 11 needs a frock apron and hkf [hankie !] for herself her mother lives with her 81 old woman bedgown and stockings')

No 168 James SUTCLIFFE Blackhouse Lane Shorey Heys Dole [meaning he was employed by the township, probably on road work] total income 9/- [there was a scale, usually 1/6 for each household member] aged 32 others 32, 6 (boy), 4, 2, and 1 week. 2 beds (Needs : 2 pairs childrens clogs childrens stockings wife flannel blanket)
