Kris [I think you are Kris ?!]

Entry 157

James LEEVER Holt Hill Weaver for W SMITH and T BLACKBURN Total family earnings per week 18/6 '6 weavers generally' Ages, with extra detail 45 (5/-) 43 (winds) 22 (4/-) 20 (4/-) 18 (3/6) 15 (2/-) 12 (G) 10 8 (G) 4 (G) 1. [G = Girl, others boys presumably] [note how the earnings do total 18/6] 3 beds 'they have buried one in the fever 2 weeks since' '4 and 8 stockings' [their needs] '8 and 12 poorly at present' [these numbers refer to ages]

My article showed a strong correlation or earnings with age (coming down again for those later in life), and this is well illustrated here.

Entry 57

John LEEVER Haggate Weaver for Moore Total earnings 8/3 45 (2/9) 20 (2/-) 15 (2/-) 14 (1/6) 10 2 beds 'wife died 22 weeks since' '10 clogs'

Entry 85

Mary LEEVER Haggate [no occupation given] Total weekly income 3/- Parish relief 3/- [so all relief] 31 9 (B) 2 and a half 1 bed 'Her husband was killed at Catlow Delf she has not had any work of about 6 months she tells me they have not broke thier fast today (3 o'clock pm) they have no fire and she says she has had nothing to buy fuel with She is very destitute of gown apron and petticoat both children without stocking and they have only one shirt apiece 9 2+1/2 clogs 9 brat [an apron]

Entry 128

Thomas LEEVER Hill End Weaver for T SMITH 64 60 27 23 19 13 7 '5 weavers'

Entry 184

Mary LEEVER near Hurstings 27 7 (B) 1 'her husband left her a year since' 'boy a brat' [meaning of course he needs an apron, not something else !]

That's it I think, none in Gt Marsden. You see what goldmine this document (and others at different dates, mainly covering Marsden I think) is !

Rex, very interesting!! Does the document say what month these descriptions were taken in 1843?

Amazing, no wonder people had such a short life expectancy.

Regards, Kristian

Kris et al

It ws February, making it all the more difficult for the people needing clothes and blankets.

For background, see Cooke Taylor's 'Tour of the Manufacturing Districts', reprinted by Cass in the sixties I think.

I was googling for "Just an Ordinary Briercliffe Family" when I came across Poverty in North East Lancashire in 1843 under www.localpopulationstudies.org.uk--------by Rex Watson. For some reason my computer can no longer copy and paste from the address bar or I would have put the whole thing on.
I think this is the article Rex mentions in the comments above.

Wow, fame at last.

Hope the article proves of interest ; remember my stricture in my March 2008 post that there is a serious error, in the labelling of an axis on a graph..
