| Post subject: | Silver Anniversary |
In 2008, we celebrate our 25th Anniversary. We should be thinking about how we should celebrate it. The Committee has decided that we should organise a Silver Anniversary Dinner and details of that will be published when they are available. There has not been a Heritage Open Day event in Briercliffe so we will have another Briercliffe Heritage Exhibition (probably in the Autumn of 2008) in which items from our Local History and Heritage Collections will be put on display. Last year such an event was organised and it proved to be a great success but this time I would like to do something really special. It could be that we might combine the Heritage Exhibition with a Heritage Walk. These are increasingly popular. Other things that have been suggested are special theatre visits, a special June Trail and a 25th Anniversary Social Evening (in addition to a dinner). What do members think of our thoughts so far? Post your thoughts/ideas here and I will pass them on to the Committee. |

Mel we did a 'ghost walk' round skipton last night, which had a bit of local history thrown in. It was really entertaining. So if there's someone who's knowledgeable enough about the history of briercliffe to guide a walk then I think it's a great idea. Especially if pubs are considered to be part of local heritage. That's about as much spirits as are probably necessary. |

Anyone can go to the meetings but you do have to become a member of the Society for insurance purposes..not sure if this is only if you plan to go regularly or regardless of how often you plan to go. It's only £5 a year though and you can join on the night. It is quite interesting, we had a slide show at the last meeting. We've had the tithe maps out at a previous meeting. Me and my mum make a day of it...leave here mid-morning and either spend the afternoon in the library or a graveyard. Great fun! |

Sounds riveting (the library or the graveyard that is). Which is quieter? I'll see what his maj is doing this evening. |

Roger (sort of) made a request last night, though not necessarily part of the celebrations but possibly something towards them. He asked that we all sit down and talk with our older Briercliffe relations and record their memories of the area. It is up to the individual how they record them, be it on tape/voice recorder or paper. I asked what the plan would be for these memories once they were all collected in. This isn't decided yet but one option was a book the other was to display them here on the website. I don't see why both can't be achieved. Many of the older members at the meetings have probably never seen the website and never will, why should they be excluded! I am unfortunate in that my Briercliffe relatives are no longer living but I have my mum racking her brain now for tales that my nan told to her. I don't think this should be exclusively 'older' relations. I'm sure that many of you have your own memories from more recent times. I'll create a new forum topic so that anyone who wishes to can post a memory or two. |

Mel I did this with my mum last Christmas. After a nice lunch and a couple of brandies I told her to relax, close her eyes and imagine she was nine years old. From getting up in a morning I asked her to describe the bedroom, what she was wearing what she had to eat and what she did at school etc etc. I wrote it all down. She really enjoyed it and I found alot of things out about the time. My mum lives in sheltered housing in Brierclifffe and I had been thinking of seeing if any of the original Sykers would like to be interviewed. Mel - graveyards - halloween - Pendle Witch Country - are you sure you are O.K? |

Thats great Pollyanna, I bet Roger would be interested. I bet they would you know, many people love to talk about their memories. I wish I could ask my nan. One tale my mum did tell me last night. I have no record of the date mind you...my nans brother, Frank Sutcliffe, blew a wall up on or around bonfire night with potash and something else. The wall was down what is now Croasdale Avenue, I don't know if that is what it was known as back then. This would be probably be about 1910, give or take a couple of years. Frank went on to become a chemist for Courtaulds. |
