Not quite Briercliffe but caught my eye just the same. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/lancashire/7278451.stm What kind of world are we living in when you are afraid to walk in the park. I know I daren't visit any of our local parks. They are a haven for drunks and drug users. Some of the churchyards are the same. I have to tread carefully for fear of a needlestick injury from the discarded needles. |

Hi Mel, There is no deterent I'm afraid, it is turning into quite a lawless society, it seems like the youth of today are being allowed to run amoke. |

Heading towards Clockwork Orange??? It is the same in Canada in large urban areas....... difference here is that between the cities (or groups of cities) are thousands of miles of space dotted with small towns/villages....there one can still feel quite safe. In the village where I live we don't lock our doors at night...or car doors at all. I could never do that in a city. |

http://www.burnleyexpress.net/burnleynews/Teen-beaten-and-mugged-in.3888250.jp Teen beaten and mugged in murder park A BURNLEY teenager has been viciously beaten and mugged in Thompson Park – just two weeks after the murder of Mohammed Shafiq. The 17-year-old was walking through the park between 9-30 and 10 p.m. on Friday when he was jumped from behind by two youths of Asian origin. He was beaten with a stick before the offenders grabbed his Sony Ericsson mobile phone and ran off. Det. Insp. Sion Hall, of Burnley CID, said the attack was in no way related to the stabbing of Mr Shafiq, but was especially nasty. "This is a shocking and nasty incident. The victim suffered a cut to his head, two black eyes and bruising all over his body. It was extremely frightening for him and, although he is at home, he is still shaken up," he said. Calls to increase security in the parks are being led by Burnley mum Mrs Maureen Jackson, whose son was attacked by a large group of youths in Queen's Park. She believes that, unless something is done, it is only a matter of time before police are treating one of the parks as another murder scene. Det. Insp. Sion Hall said patrols were to be increased around the park and long-term plans were being looked at. "In the short-term we're looking at increasing police patrols in and around the park. Obviously for the long-term we are looking at things like better lighting in the park and maybe CCTV," said Det. Insp. Hall. "We know there were people in the park between 9-30 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Friday and if anybody has seen anything that could assist us with our investigation then I urge them to come forward." Anyone with information can contact Burnley police on 01282 425001 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Whay would anyone walk through a park after dark in the first place? |
