http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/libraries/ ... /colne.asp Doreen Crowther Pedigrees and Property Deeds This collection was donated to the Community History library by the family of the late Doreen Crowther, an eminent family and local historian. The collection consists of pedigrees of some 500 local Pendle family names. In 1967 Donald Short, Clerk to Nelson Council, asked Mrs Crowther to examine the Urban District Council deeds that had been damaged by floods in that year. Her digest became a working index to them; it was added to between the years 1972 - 1986 covering the deeds of Pendle. It is in an alphabetical format, cross-referenced by deed number. The deeds have been added to using additional information from other sources such as census returns, local newspapers, parish registers, etc. For a list of the surnames within the collection, visit http://www.lfhhs-pendleandburnley.org.u ... wthped.htm |

It doesn't matter which surname you look at. You'll end up being curious about other files just from looking at the one file of interest!! |

I found some of the things in the collection very interesting, but I had trouble believing some of the dates with no source. I have been stuck on a James Kippax who died 1769. Doreen Crowther has his birth as 1731, the only birth I have been able to find for a James is 1719, I have hunted high and low for another and cannot see one, I just wish I knew where she had found this. She has the five children correct, and the date of birth of one, again correct. She then follows down this line, I follow a younger brother. Also, to the side of James, not as wife, it says Mary Kippax m Lawrence Lee. Is she meant to be his sister, I would think so, but again no source. |

Don't you just hate it when people don't give citations for their sources. Some of mine just say I got it from my mum, but at least you can judge for yourself how reliable it might be |

In the package I was looking at, there were all kinds of letters and scraps of paper that, maybe if I read them in more detail the sources might have been more obvious. |

The Crowther collection is not open access as it was before the refurb. The drawers are now kept locked so you have to request whatever it is you wish to look at. Good from a security point of view but from a researcher angle - I think the opportunity of spotting something you were not expecting has gone. While sources are not noted in much of the file, Doreen does mention Caleb Howarth quite a few times. Does anyone know who he was? |
