Findmypast has
1841 - 1911 Census
Births, Marriages & Deaths
Parish Records
Migration Records
Military Records
Specialist Records
for £149.90------or all but 1911 census for £89.95------I don't think I can justify £149.90 and I have just cancelled my renewal of Ancestry so I am looking for something else------are they getting more expensive, or is it me???

They are getting a lot more expensive.
I have started to opt for 6 month subscriptions where available. I think you can get fed up with what is available on some sites or think you are getting access to more that what you actually are often leaving you tied into a pricey 12month waste of time.

Might look into something for 6 months then Mel, thanks.
Most of the time I think I look for other people, as my lot go back pre census and 1837, but when you haven't got it ---sods law you want to look something up for yourself.

I did miss having census access when I was between sites.
A lot of the subscriptions now state 'no look-ups'. Not sure how they monitor it but it perhaps falls into a fair usage type category.

I really like The Genealogist because it has pre-census records as well as census, Non-Conformist records in particular. It's been quite handy for some of my Sutcliffe stuff as they used Colne Primitive Methodist and TG has the records with images. I have only ever seen a transcript at Colne library.
I have not even looked at some of what is available on TG yet.

They also have a 'circa 1911' section....no idea what's there yet.
The site says 'census transcripts' but they do also have the images, they are good quality and viewed as pdf's.

I didn't like the search to begin with but I have got used to it.

Thanks Mel, I think you have made the decision for me----The Genealogist looks like it has won the vote.
Wonder what "fair usage" is? I suppose they monitor it by noting the surnames you search, and if they are always different they will look into it--possibly--- :?

I don't know how they can though and be 'fair'.
I have loads of surnames in my file and will always look at most if not all of them when joining a new site. I like to paint (where possible) a complete picture for each inidividual in my tree.

Why not take advantage of the pay as you go or 1 month sub to see if you like it? I think it is an option

Can't find the one month sub, everything seems to have minimum term of 6months. The Personal Plus Annual has acces to all databases for £55-95 with 800 credits------how many credits gets you what???? Can't seem to find anything on the site which explains that.

Perhaos the monthly price was just showing what it worked out when buying for a longer term then.

No idea about the credits - not something that I saw when I took my sub out.
