The following is taken from LFHHS yahoo groups forum.

In this quarter's issue of 'The Yorkshire Family Historian' - a gentleman named Stephen Whiteley (who is very knowledgeable about a variety of genealogical matters) - has written an article about the 1911 census.

It seems that many women who were angry and upset at the government's continued refusal to grant thm the vote - boycotted the 1911 census. There were 2 forms of protest;
1. The women, or their husbands refused to fill in the form.
2. The women evaded the census by staying away from home for the night.

Hence if you cannot find one of your female ancestors in 1911 - they may have been an active suffragette.

There was something about it in WDYTYA magazine a couple of months ago. Not something I had ever thought of. I don't think any of mine are missing but I may have to go through them one by one now to check :shock:

Thanks Gloria

"Only women"!!!! bet my female ancestors would have had something to say about that----it's in the genes.
Welcome back Stephen.

Sadly, I doubt that most peoples' female ancestors would have been too bothered about wanting to shake up the status quo of male-only votes pre-1918.

Thanks for the welcome! Been very busy for the last month or two with job applications and interviews. Not had much time for much in the way of genealogy...

I've not had chance to read it yet.

Have you been successful Stephen? I know you have had one or two trips up and down the country on the bus! :lol:

Mel,

Still don't know about the Beeb job - had a second interview, over a week ago, but they've still not let me know. Very frustrating. I lost out on a policey one to someone who had already been doing the job elsewhere. Not heard back from the third application at all, yet. So there's still hope...I hope...! :)
