I have been asked to give this some publicity from a member of LFHHS

“Hewitson Day”- Saturday 17th September 2011
Anthony Hewitson (1836-1912) was born in Blackburn, raised in Ingleton and spent much of his working life as a journalist in Lancaster and Preston. He is best known for the books he wrote (‘Northward’ and two on his visits to Preston and district churches and chapels) and for his work as a pioneering newspaper editor (‘The Preston Chronicle’) in Preston. Writing as ‘Atticus’,he was a ‘mover and shaker’ in the town and personified Victorian small-town provincial journalism. He fathered eleven children and kept diaries, 19 of which have recently been bought by the Lancashire Archives and are being transcribed. They are the only known diaries of a Victorian provincial journalist and offer an insight into family, town and national life. Much more will be heard of Anthony Hewitson in the near future.
‘Hewitson Day’ will be held in the hall of St Leonard’s Church, Marshalls Brow, Penwortham,Preston PR1 9JA (10.am- 4pm) and consist of four illustrated lectures on Hewitson’s life and work (Andrew Hobbs),his diaries and family (Margaret Dickinson), his visits to churches & chapels (Terry Mansfield & Bob Dobson) and on Preston’s newspapers in the Victorian era ( Andrew Hobbs) . I hope that there will be plenty to interest local historians and that there will be some descendants present to celebrate the life of this major figure whose import Bob Dobson 3, Staining Rise, Staining, Blackpool FY3 0BU Tel; 01253 886103 or 8985678

ance has been previously understated.
The day will start with registration and a cup of tea/coffee. There will be a lunch break – a finger buffet is offered. The cost for attendance with a buffet will be £15, or £9 without it. There are food shops and a ‘pub nearby. I hope there will be a cup of tea on leaving. There’s a sizeable car park and it is on the No 3 (Stagecoach) route ( every 9 minutes) from Preston Bus Station to Kingsfold..(Final date for booking is 11th September)
