The records of over half a million men who served in the Militia between 1806-1915 are now available online at findmypast.co.uk ( http://enews.nationalarchives.gov.uk/MA ... 2-0/c.aspx )* in association with The National Archives. The Militia, a forerunner to the British Territorial Army, was a voluntary part-time force made up of working men from a wide range of professions. The Militia Attestation Papers in WO 96 were filled in at recruitment, providing unique descriptions of the recruits' personal appearance, and most were annotated with the date of discharge so that they form a record of service. For more information on finding militia records go to our research signpost ( http://enews.nationalarchives.gov.uk/MA ... 3-0/c.aspx ) and our in-depth guide ( http://enews.nationalarchives.gov.uk/MA ... 4-0/c.aspx ). If you're looking to extend your military research further, then you might want to explore our collection of over 5 million medal cards from the First World War. The cards - which record the medals an individual was entitled to, and often the first theatre of war they fought in - are available on DocumentsOnline ( http://enews.nationalarchives.gov.uk/MA ... 5-0/c.aspx ).* |
