:? Would a record of a birth in Newchurch in Pendle in 1743 be at Preston?

The above's gtx4 grandson was born on a ship to Oz. in 1883, he was named Cephalonia Charles Seaborn!! Thistlethwaite. Poor child, probably learnt to spell quite young.

The question is, how long to sail there at that date AND, did they volunteer or were they sent!!! It must have been a bit unusual at that time to emigrate?

Hi Hannah,
if you go to http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/education/ ... /folk2.asp

click on N you can find Newchurch in Pendle, so yes they would appear to be there. Looks like a trip out to Preston for you.

Hi again, the furthest I have got is George Thistlethwaite b. 1743spelt on Family Search as Thiatlewhite, but it's the right man, married to Tabitha Stuttard d.o.b about the same, her father was Richard Stuttard and grandfather Thomas, b. 1682, d 1721.
Can't find George though. :)

I see no Baptisms for any Thistlethwaite between 1740 and 1750 at Newchurch in Pendle.
I had a look at the entry on familysearch and as it is a member submission, it's not as likely to be accurate (some of the familysearch entries are extracted from Parish Records and some are member submissions. PR's are more accurate than the latter) though it doesn't give a specific date. It's quite possible that the baptism took place at Colne church, I don't have a source to check for those. A trip to Colne library has to be easier than a trip to Preston?

Hannah,

it all comes off the Internet, mostly from Google searches - the trick is to ask the right question and not give up! Being retired, I have lots of time to pursue whatever catches my attention.

In this case, I guessed that the boy born at sea must have been named after the ship, so I searched for Cephalonia Australia 1883. I also found a crew and passenger list for the outward voyage (but not for the homeward) but there was no Thistlethwaite on it. http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/1883/03/024cep.htm If Kevin Thistlethwaite was right, and the round voyage was a one-off, I guess young Cephalonia Seaborn (poor kid!) was the baby born at Aden on the return voyage.

The SS Cephalonia was a Cunard ship and normally sailed to and from North America

Just a thought Hannah, although I found nothing for your George Thistlethwaite at St Mary's in Newchurch in Pendle, could he have been Non-Conformist? I've no knowledge of the Non-Conformists in the area, if there were any or when they began.

There's a nonconformist church in Roughlee but that didn't start doing baptisms until 1866
Downham started in 1653.
Clitheroe started in 1570.
I would have thought either of the above two would be a good bet, as they wouldn't be too far from Newchurch.

I have looked at my disc for Peter Walkden and his son Henry and he wasn't baptised by either of those.

Having checked the surname index, there are no Thistlethwaites at all in Newchurch PR's from 1574 - 1754.

There is a Tabitha Stuttard baptism in 1747. Daughter of Richard.

:?: How do you do this Mel?? I can't make any headway at all. Yes she is in the right place, so, could he be an 'immigrant' from over the border, yorkshire I mean,I assumed the family were farmers, but no, someone looking for work, there were mills there then I believe, it is getting less glamourous.

So, if there is a record of George marrying Tabitha Stuttard in 1768,at Newchurch, they must have both been living there and the record of their marriage must have been found somewhere.Presume that there would be little info. on the church record of the marriage about the groom in those days?? :?

Their son John is recorded in1770 at Newchurch, so assume they were settled there.

Hannah what is the source for Newchurch? What documents are you seeing that say they were at Newchurch? If this is from the entry on the Familysearch site, I would quote it with caution. The person who added the entry may not have seen any church records and could have made an assumption due to the sons birth perhaps (assuming you have seen this baptism for yourself).

As Gloria suggests, I'd try Clitheroe and Downham and also Burnley.

I have a book that was published by the Lancashire Parish Records Society which has a good surname index in the back. Thistlethwaite is not listed at all which means, for the years covered, there were no Thistlethwaites (or any other spelling) attending St Mary's. Unless the transcribers got it wrong when doing the book but I can't see how they can miss one surname completely.
