Dear all,

Would anyone with Ancestry access be willing to do a lookup for me...?

Cheers, Sir!

I've been branching off the main tree a bit and have been researching a little around the husband of one of Grandad Bray's sisters.

The chap in question is William James Bone, born in Toxteth Park, Liverpool in 1893 to another William Bone. Now, in the 1911 census, I've found that "Bill Bone" as he was known is at Orford Barracks in Warrington where he is enlisted as a Private in the Liverpool Kings Regiment. He's 17 years old, which seems to tie in exactly with my Bill.

Having found this out, all I can presume is that he will have definitely served in World War One and, as he was still alive in 1957, I know that he survived it, so there should be a fairly interesting service record around there somewhere. I was wondering whether Ancestry is able to provide it? As this year I'm on Genes Reunited rather than Ancestry (it saves more on the pocket to alternate the two!) I can't do any more than list all the William Bones on there.

So, if at all possible, do you think you could have a look and see if a record that looks relevant is available...?

I don't think there's any more information I can give. I've not even managed to find Bill's Mum's name (although his step-Mum is Martha Ganley).

Many, many thanks in advance!

Stephen

Hi Stephen, there are WW1 service records for William James Bone (b. 1891, residence 86 Rontown Road, Stamshaw, Portsmouth) but unfortunately I cannot find documents for your man. I presume his records come under the burned series. Sorry. http://www.btinternet.com/~prosearch/tomspage16.html

Kris,

Oh, what a shame! I thought that anything up to 'F' was generally safe. What a pity! Thank you very much for looking, though. Oh, and that is indeed them in 1901...

Kris,

Seeing as you so kindly asked (and, will no doubt soon regret!) I'm also interested in potential WWI records for any of these four relatives, all of whom I'm at least 90% sure did see service:

John Alfred Bray (b. Liverpool June 1897 to Alfred and Sarah Ellen Bray). Served as a Merchant Seaman it's believed.
William Bray (b. Liverpool 6th June 1900 to Alfred and Emma Bray). Also served as a Merchant Seaman (but it's believed he had 'war medals')
Henry Staveley Buttle (b. Anlaby/Sculcoates nr. Hull June qtr. 1891 to David England Buttle and Sarah Anne Buttle). There is a Henry S. Buttle record on Ancestry that I presume is him.
Robert Archer (b. Hull Mar qtr. 1896 to Edward and Ann Archer). I believed he served, but I'm also aware it's quite a common name, so I'm not sure how it can be whittled down...

And in exchange Kris, if there's anything at all I can offer research wise, then please don't hesitate to ask...!

Stephen

Hi Stephen, this is all that I could find:

Medal Card:
BUTTLE, Henry S.
Corp: R.F.A.
Rank: Gunner
Regimental Number: 96312
Medals: Victory, British, 1915 Star
Theatre of War: France
Date of Entry: 11 February 1915
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/Defa ... id=2568097

There are lots of Robert Archer’s in the Medal rolls, but unfortunately I cannot find anything in the service records for someone with this name who was born in the Hull area c. 1896.

Here is some information on Merchant Navy records http://www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/stor ... 5623.shtml

Kris,

Many thanks for all that. What would be the reasons for Robert and Henry's full army records/pension details not being available? Lost in the fire? Robert certainly would have been given some pensionable pay as he lost toes and fingers in the trenches...

As for the Merchant Navy chaps, William certainly won medals during WWI. Would these not be recorded on Ancestry, and would I have to go through Merchant Navy channels?

Unfortunately, I can't use the Ancestry link that you've given me. Is it just the basic info on his medal card? No facsimile copy to be had...?

Again, many thanks for getting this far!

Stephen
