I subscribe to Ancestry. I didn't renew last time due to the cost, and then noticed a 12 months half price offer and took that up.
I felt a bit lost without it, although I mostly use it when looking for other people.

I was talking to my friend last night and she is much in the same mind. I have discovered that I now only get the very bare minimum since Ancestry changed their subscriptions. I am going to leave them when time comes in February. I'm going to take an annual subscription with the origins network as I hope this may give my Irish line a jumpstart, I will take this out when I get back off my hols if not before. I'm also going to take 6 months with Findmypast to see how I get on with it.

My Ancestry sub is up at the end of September, I will not be re-newing either, I wonder if they are losing a lot of members at Ancestry, there seems to be a lot of disgruntled people, I hope they are feeling it because it serves them right for being greedy.

I have a subscription with ancestry and I had a sub with genes reunited. GR was only £10 (I think).

Findmypast have increased the cost of their subscription....REALLY increased. It does include access to the 1911 but it's a lot more expensive than Ancestry now.
6 months is £94.90, 12 months is £149.90. Hmmm, decisions decisions. I had thought I would go to Findmypast but thats a heck of a price to pay!

Gloria, do you get access to the Parish records on Ancestry. If so, are they worth the bother? From the write up, I get the impression that they could be a repeat of Familysearch stuff. The Findmypast records are from FFHS, not that I know if they are up to much.

Included in the Ancestry subscription are several things that I think hold no value at all...
Learn family history hints and tips at the online Ancestry Learning Centre (Plenty of forums available)
Be the first to find out about new record releases and site features with your monthly Ancestry membership e-newsletter (more adverts?)
Create, grow and share your family tree online (PAF suits me fine)
Get help from the world's largest online family history community (Again, plenty of forums out there for help)

Origins is still appealing. They seem to have different records from both Findmypast and Ancestry. I get the idea that those two sites are very much in competition whereas the smaller players are 'keeping their heads down' and perhaps doing it very well?

Origins has Yorkshire Perogative Court and Borthwick Institute stuff....not seen that elsewhere. Also Poor Law Records. I think I will try a 72 hour subscription at the weekend and dabble to see how worthwhile it is...at £47 per year, it certainly sounds better value for money and they are slowly adding census records, something they didn't have previously.

You can get access to parish records on Essentials Ancestry but you have to upgrade your membership to access the details. The initial search can be done on the basic membership (Essentials), this tells you if they have any more info on the person you are looking for, but you need to upgrade to go further. The Premium membership which includes this is annual £8-95 per month after 14day free trial or £12-95 per month after free trial. There is a Worldwide membership which costs annual £12-95 per month after free trial or £18-95 per month after free trial and that gives access to everything they have.

Have spent the last 12 months or so with The Genealogist, it's time for a change. Partly because they are now one of the most expensive sites with, what is in my opinion, one of the worst search functions and partly because I think to get the benefit of all that is available online, I need to change rather than stay loyal to any one site.

So, do I go with Findmypast or Ancestry? Ancestry premium sub if £107 (worldwide is £155) whereas I can upgrade to Full sub with Findmypast for only £55 because they are offering me a discount because I have subscribed to the 1911 for the last 12/18 months. I'm tempted with Findmypast based purely on cost. I can currently access Ancestry at my local archives though with the cutbacks, I'm not sure if this will continue (they have already reduced opening hours to only 4 hours a day for 3 days and 10-7 on the 4th day!).

Is anyone using Findmypast - how do you find the search function....I find that the most important bit! I think their 1911 database is quite well transcribed but it is the only database I have experience of.

This discussion has come up recently with LFHHS. It started when someone commented that you needed to cancel thegenealogist or it would automatically renew. Mine is due for renewal at the end of June so I sent an e-mail to cancel at end of my sub, and would they confirm. This they did. I know quite a few other people have cancelled theirs so they must be wondering what is going on. I was sent a graph of what is on each website from a genealogy mag, that brought thegenealogist up as one of the best. I have honestly struggled with it, the search brings up too many, and sometimes none at all when I know they are there!!!
I too have looked at findmypast and at the moment it is favourite over ancestry. Ancestry I must admit, I love the old search, and that is what came up on the LFHHS, no one likes the new search facility. You can however change to the old one so all is not lost.
I still have a couple of months to think about it :? :? :?

The thing I like most about the search on other sites is that you can include year of birth +/- 5 etc. While TG allows keywords, this all important birth year is too exact with their system.

I have found quite a bit on their site, it was the Non-conformist records that drew me in and have been really useful.
I no longer think they are good value for money though when you consider Findmypast is £129 for 'Full' sub and that includes an already complete and active 1911 census database. TG is currently priced at £129.45 inc. (This is the price with the £20 discount as advertised in their introductory offer) 1911 census but the 1911 is in the very early stages with only Buckinghamshire available for searching and I don't think that is yet complete.
Findmypast is also the only site (thats I am aware of) to offer a loyalty discount.

TG is a good site with records not available elsewhere and is certainly up there as a main contender but I don't think any one site could be considered 'the best'. I don't see how like for like comparisons can be made when they vary with the data sets available. I know they all have census and bmd but that is more or less where it ends.
