My grandfather was called Rowland Denis Kippax, his father had a brother called Rowland who died aged 4yrs. Neither of the names Rowland or Denis appear earlier in the family, neither do they seem common names to an area where parents/grandparents names were commonly used. I am trying to figure out where they may have come from.
Rowland Denis was born 1902
Rowland was born 1891, died 1895.
I think it is obvious that Grandad was named after the first Rowland, but don't know where that name can have come from.
Any ideas???

Another point Rowland 1891 had two brothers, James and Thomas, both named after his parents fathers, and a sister, Mary Jane, named after her mother (Jane) and her fathers mother (Mary). So they definitely kept to the family names.
Mary Jane was born 1878.
James and Thomas were born 1875 and 1877.
So Rowland was born quite a few years after the other three. It has crossed my mind that Rowland may be Mary Janes' but that being the case I wouldn't have thought the name would have been passed down to Grandad.

Could it be that 'Rowland' was fashionable at the time? I have a Rowland born roughly the same period.

Possibly Mel, but I don't know where it came from--ie--someone famous at the time. And, the second name, Denis, not heard of any of those before then---especially for either of them -up syke.

My Grandfather, Stanley Lord, worked for Rowland Dennis in the 1960s. I remember because I sometimes used to go with him to his work, either when I was staying with my grandparents over the weekend or possibly after being picked up from school and the punters had all gone home. I can't quite remember when. My grandad would do what he had to do in the office whilst I would chalk or draw with my grandma.

Stan Lord had a son Brian who also worked in the betting offices.

That's right Gloria. Brian is my mum's brother. I wasn't sure if he'd worked for Rowland Dennis or not.

Btw. did I ever come to your house with my grandad? I remember your name . I think I came around once. It must be about 40 years ago now.

Dad sold the business in 1972 just before I got married, so it would have been before that.

I remember Rowland and his son Kenneth ? I think. I also remember you gloria and your brother Keith. The last time that I saw you was when we were in our early teens. I think that your grandfather Rowland must have married one of my great grandfathers daughters. I remember most of them and can account for meeting 3 of his daughters and 3 of his sons but there were obviously 7 or 8 of them as I see from the forum that my grandmother Amy got probate for a Luther Brierley who I remember tidying his grave up in Haggate burial ground. I am aware of most of the Brierley family tree but can't extend the Kippax side of the family. I spent a lot of time with Ian Kippax up to being about 10 as my grandma was his aunty Amy. You did contact me about 4 years ago but I e mailed you back and did not get any response. I hope that you are still about and ok. I now live on the Mull of Kintyre but would love to meet up sometime. I come to Burnley once a month to see my 97 year old mum. Here's hoping for a reply, Russell Brierley.
