Taken from "Walks in a Lancashire Township. No.1 The Villages of Briercliffe". Roger Frost and Malcolm Higgin

Higher Cockden Farm is on Todmorden Road. Locally it is known as Pollards, it was home to the Pollard family during the early 17th century. George Mason kept a pedigree herd of cattle at Higher Cockden.

Cockden can be traced to at least 1443. In 1560 it was the home of John Halstead (or Halsted) who was a clothier. The name means ‘cock valley’ and the bird referred to was probably the woodcock, a bird which was netted for food in the Middle Ages. (It is unlikely that the bird was the domestic fowl).

Also in the same book

‘Pollards’ is the popular name for Higher Cockden Farm. The Pollard family had a long association with the farm dating from at least 1604 when the death of Thomas Pollard of Cockden is recorded
